After over 40 years of business and at the age of 76 my dad, who owns Swift Sports in Grand Parade, has decided to call it a day.

On the basis that many NSCers have probably bought something from him over the years I promised him I'd let the world of NSC know that he's having a retirement sale and has lots of great stock to clear between now and Christmas!

And if any old regulars just want to pass by and reminisce about the days of the white Jimmy Greaves boot and wooden tennis rackets I'm sure he'd also be happy to have a chat!

We have an eight-year-old, and have been extremely grateful to Swifts Sports over the last few years. It will be missed. Here's to a happy retirement.

How sad to see; bought my first boots there - and various bits of cricket kit over the years.

Perhaps the most amazing thing is the shop's fascia hasn't changed for more than 40 years - I can't think of many other places in Brighton that have been unaltered for that long.

Wishing your parents a long and happy retirement

Up and Coming Sunny Portslade
Growing up in Hove and then moving to Portslade I used to get most of my kit from Sports Corner or David Rose. Moved to Brightoin in my late teens and from then on got all my cricket gear from Swifts. Was only thinking the other day how very few proper sports shops there are left as I walked past the old Sports Corner which is now yet another late night dodgy convenience store.

Happy retirement to your old mad tinged with sadness that yet another specialist local shop is closing. Thank goodness for Run.

Just far enough away from LDC
I had a conversation with my 8 year old just at the weekend about swifts, David rose and wisdens.

I got my first rugby gumshield from swifts, as well as boots, snooker stuff etc

I will pay a visit with my sons now before its too late.

Ha wow sports corner, takes me back. Forgot that place existed after the many awful shops it became.

Got my 1970 Brazil kit in there after pestering my Mum every time the bus went past it in the window display.

I'm another who's very sad to see it go. Every pair of goalkeeper gloves that I owned between the ages of 12 and 23(when I left the country) were bought in Swifts. As were my socks for Hove Park Colts. I loved the shop for its excellent service and amazing array of sporting goods. A proper sports shop. Brighton won't be the same without it.

I hope your dad has a very happy retirement.

Remember them well, particularly your mum as I didn't last too long in the scouts. My nan used to live on Grove Hill so used to pop in regularly on Saturdays, they always had time for a chat. One thing I do remember is the bright orange football they supplied for our cub games, not sure what it was made of , I suspect concrete. You learned very quickly when heading only to give it a glancing flick at best. One of the opposition tied to chest it down once and took no further part in the proceedings.
