I think starting off by asking everyone politely to tone it down will be fine. People who use this board are, by and large, more mature than they pretend. Any persistent offenders you can then have a quiet word with, and the swear filter can be considered as a last resort.

Agreed Curious Orange - well put...

Yep, no more 'c' words, especially when suffixed by 'Palace', and a reduction in the 'f' words, perhaps save them for when we sign a half-decent midfield player for real money?

:D

As the Barnet 5 (or 7 as it later regretably turned out) discussed on Saturday the word Knut shall now be used instead of the C word! Failing that i shall use Bearded Clamp!

I think a threat/request like this ought to limit the foul language enough. Often, we forget where we are and that maybe other more delicate ears are listening. I know i do. So i shall hasten to revert to less erroneous ground.

It is worth mentioning that when we were all physically in the same room that the foul language wasn't excessively apparent despite the amount of alcohol being consumed.

Don't agree with censorship so the swearing stays (including the C-word for emergencies) BUT the gratuitous swearing goes. And that includes me. Sorry if I've offended anyone :)

Isn't it "Bearded Clam" by the way?

I'll swear like a trooper when I talking to other adult men in pubs etc. Milder swearing in front of the ladies (No Fs No Cs).

It is more difficult in the heat of a game. Especially if Prosser is reffing. I try to keep it down as there are always kids about and being a father myself, I hate swearing in front of chidren. Always have done.

I won't swear on here. If I have to (and that is unlikely) I'll put in the odd asterisk.

Is it possible to create an option so that if a person doesn't want to see swearing, then they can simply click on it and the words will be blocked out? Then every user is happy.... sort of. Am I right in thinking that the old NSC used to have this (the white-background one back in about 2001)?

If not, then there's not really a problem getting rid of swearing, because we can all think of different words if the need be, it just might not be natural forethought and might require me to put brain in gear for a moment to think of something more appropriate :)

The C word is used a bit too frequantly on here. I say we go for Trigger's use of Bearded Clamp or possibly Piss Flaps as a replacment!

Swear filters are a waste of time - people find ways of getting round them.

However, you could put up some message board guidelines (however you see fit) and if people cross the line excessively or unreasonably then a PM could be sent. Anyone going over the top might then expect a ban - tough.

That said, I think you've got to be reasonably tolerant to make it work as it would ruin the feel of the board to over-sanitise it.

One more thing, anyone who doesn't like a particular postor's language can always pop them on their ignore list - this will eliminate the problem (unless they are quoted of course).

My kids like looking at the smilies - particularly the vomit one for some reason. So I was a bit peturbed today to see that two new ones have been added.

The two I suspect you are referring to have been removed.

(Now to hang the person who added them....)

People will try and poster cleaner, but will eventually fall back into old habits and this thread will appear again in 6 months time.

Bring it back I say.

If you cant convey your feelings without swearing.....

Like most people occasionally I feel the urge to use every swear word under the sun, but not on this site.

I has been mentioned before and the ladies of the board have mentioned it again very recently that we do have a problem with the c word.

It is particularly offensive to ladies.

It would be nice to be able to trust people not to be offensive and to exercise discipline but would it happen?

I agree that gratuitous swearing is both pointless and childish. I don't post a great deal, and I do try to make sure my posts don't contain excessive, needless bad language. However I must ask why the c word is seen as so offensive to women.

It's a word, nothing more. We all know what it means and what it's referring to, so why is it seen as more offensive than any of the other words or phrases commonly used, like bearded clam?

I know several women who use the word, and indeed embrace use of the word. Their argument is that if they reclaim it, it can't be used aggressively against them.

That word is used in many ways, like most swearwords, as a term of endearment, as a term of dislike, or often just for effect and shock value. I really don't see why anyone should be more offended by that than any other swearword or slang.

I like having the option of using 'bad' language-sometimes only THE word or words will do....no asterisked out substitutes, no reversal of letters. Sometimes it just has to be a couple of swear words-as in life!

A swear filter will only lead to fcuk, ****, etc being used in their place and we all know what word the poster wanted to use (and in fact did use). It'll be like listening to the radio shows discussing swearing when they use phrases like 'the f-word, the c-word, etc'. Everybody knows what the f-word is and when hearing that phrase we automatically insert the deleted word. At least my brain does!

No filter and believe that, as adults, we will tone things down. Failure to comply? Kick the mother f**ckers  off...
