My first England away match was the 5-1 in Munich thanks for the great memories of that night
RIP Sven
31st August 2001….i know that because my daughter was born about two hours after the game finished (which was very thoughtful of Mrs Mac)

Very thoughtful indeed, but it was 1st September 2001.

We lost 2-0 to Northampton away the night before on the 31st August.

I got the train down afterwards and disembarked at Gatwick Airport! :)

Exactly. I got married on the Friday thinking I wouldn't miss an Albion match (date selected before the fixture release), watched the 5-1 on the Sat and then flew off to the Seychelles on the Sunday! (The other big event was of course 9-11 and we had to fly back a few days after that!).

As for his record, he did as well if not better and was hampered by the usual xenophobes (yet there really wasn't any Englishman around that was good enough!)

worse England manager ever, but out of respect RIP
Sometimes it's best to say nothing.

Had England been better at taking penalties, he may have been the last to win a major trophy.

From 67 games in charge, Sven had a W40 D17 L10 record. That's a 59.7% Win Percentage.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England_national_football_team_manager

Keegan? 38.9%
McClaren? 50.0%
Hodgson? 58.9%
Robson? 49.5%
Taylor? 47.5%
Venables? 47.8%
Revie? 48.3%
Winterbottom? 56.1%

Of England managers who've been in the job for more than just the odd game, Sven has the 6th highest win percentage.

Only Capello (66.7%), Southgate (62.7%), Ramsey (61.1%), Hoddle (60.7%) and Greenwood (60.0%) are higher.

Clearly he's not the worst. Are you still recovering from the Euros? :)

Still in Brighton
Tbf the 5-1 game alone makes me always think of him positively, so that's a decent legacy. RIP.

edit - read the news, totally forgot he managed Man City 😯
