You mean competed with Manchester United, then Chelsea, with smaller funds, with a team playing superb football. Oh - and generally making money from players he sells. I think he deserves all the plaudits he gets. I am no Arsenal fan - but he must the best manager in Europe mustn't he ?

Well ................. if it was so easy every manager at every club would be doing it. But it clearly isn't that easy.

But the managers at most of the big clubs are doing it... I'm sure Arsenal weren't the only club that came in for most of the players I mentioned, but Arsene Wenger obviously can be very persuasive when he wants to be ??? Take the Walcott example - Chelsea were after him as well, but Arsene (and probably, in fairness, looking at SWP) convinced him that Arsenal was a better place for him. It's not a case of him picking up crap players and making them good, he picks up good players and makes them better. Which is still not a bad achievement at all. The Chelsea example is a good one - Ranieri picked up Gallas, Cech etc and while everyone knew they were going to be good, they became perhaps better than was expected while at Chelsea.

And yeah, Wenger is a good manager, I'm not disputing that. He's done wonderfully well with Arsenal. And this season he appears to have got even better; before this season there seemed to be no plan B when teams got in their faces and stopped them playing their excellent football, at least in Europe this season Wenger has shown that he knows there is another way. The only thing that gets my goat is when people claim that he created a team from nothing: he created a team from having a very good scouting network and being very persuasive

I'm not disputing Wenger is an excellent manager, it just appears that people seem intent on treating Wenger as if he has brought all these players through from obscurity and that isn't the case. They seem to have 'appropriated' a lot of their young players from other clubs. Something that people have a go at Chelsea and United for. United Youth policy seems to bring through more players from this country and who have started at the club and Chelsea under Ranieri appeared just as good at plucking players who were decent and making them world stars. I think Wenger has done an excellent job but I don't think people should gloss over the less sensational aspects of his player policy.

The best manager in Europe? Not in my eyes, he's not a great tactician, and he hasnt won a European trophy (yet). Mourinhos Porto team probably cost a good deal less.
