Is no-one else bothered by this? We need the uni on our side (even if the ground will be on the other side of the motorway!)

But the consensus is that most of the students at the Uni would probably support the stadium as it offers other amenities than football.

This Glass Gobshite is not speaking on behalf of the faculty, just him and a few other soap dodgers.

if i go to wolves, may find myself a nice Brum girl:angel:

Which campus at Wolves (I am one of the Students' Union Sabbatical Officers there!).

Oh - and don't EVER call the locals 'brums', trust me, your life isn't worth it!

On the stadium - seems to be a minority who unfairly presented the case without inviting the opposition.

Madness!

Statement just posted on there from USSU Officers:

The University of Sussex Students’ Union (USSU) is not staging a campaign against Falmer Stadium, as reported in The Argus. At a Union General Meeting (UGM) on 14 March of roughly 30 students, attendees voted to work on opposing the development, but this meeting did not have quorum required to make a decision on behalf of the Union.

USSU supports the right of all students to campaign on issues they care about and provides numerous forums for debate on such issues. However, the low number of students in attendance at this meeting means that any decision is not representative of USSU policy and the Union will only be involved in a supportive capacity.

Although USSU President, Dan Glass, proposed the motion, any involvement he has in the campaign is currently only in a supportive capacity and will not interfere with his work for the Union or his commitment to student-led issues.

The Students’ Union is both democratic and accountable, holding several general meetings each year, where decisions are passed if 500 students are in attendance (quorum).

Therefore making Dan Glass' comments utterly pointless:lolol:

Why on earth did Dan Glass talk to the press than?

Sounds like he is involved in more than a supportive capacity.

just read all this, as a former Sussex student was going to say there was no way that meeting had quorum has to be 10% of students. But looks like someone got there before me

i think the numbers of people at the ugm are being is being exagerated, i think at max i counted 12 people there.
i think dan believes he is representing the students, he's not and i've told him so. but he is obsessed with this "eco-uni" thing.

Have sent this Email to the Glass bloke:

Dear Mr Glass,

I would like to congratulate you on your stance toward the proposed stadium development next to the university buildings along Lewes Road and opposite the University of Sussex.

It is clear that your comments in your bio on your webpage are true. By this I mean your comments about 'maintaining a spirit of comradeship and cooperation between students and the rest of the community'.

By holding a vote amongst a paltry 40 students and without other parties being able to put their views across to those concerned you have truly reflected Comradeship of Zimbabwean proportions. I addition, by making the vote of 40 against the stadium public knowledge in the local press, you have endeared yourself to the local community in ways you could not possibly imagine.

In all seriousness, I would ask how long you have lived in Brighton? I have lived here all my life (33 years) and I will be here when I die. My ancestors were one of the first families to move to Brighton as it was then and future generations will I hope remain here.

Therefore, knowing Brighton and Falmer as well as I do, your comments that there are better places to build the stadium are quite simply incorrect. Regardless of previous public enquiries(of which you and your group were welcome to provide submissions but failed to do so), the only site that is feasible is the site next to the University buildings in Falmer. By saying that the stadium being built at this site is wrong really is hypocritical, when you are happy to use these facilities that were built on the South Downs long before you and your fellow students were born.

I have always thought that the University brings huge benefits to the local area as will the stadium and I feel that you are being incredibly short sighted with your views.

The plans for the stadium have been drawn up to have a limited impact on the local environment and the sustainable transport policy is a model that local authorities will use for future "green" developments.

Finally, lets be honest, the site itself is hardly the idyllic picture as some would describe. So please, I would therefore ask that you offer the Club and more importantly, your landlords, Brighton & Hove Council to represent their views at a balanced discussion rather than have a knee-jerk reactive NIMBY approach which I am sure is going to provoke much more hostile approach than mine.
