Sussex to bring in Kolpak player?

I know I will probably appear stupid but what is Kolpak player.

Anyone residing in the EU can play for the county and are not deemed to be an overseas player. They effectively forgo their country of birth. I think Kolpak was a Slovakian Handball player or something like that and the court ruling meant that he was elligible to play for a German team.

Murray Goodwin is our Kolpak player at the moment.

That reads like you can only have Kolpak player at any one time; there's no limit on them - although as someone pointed out earlier, Sussex would get less money from the ECB if we played two.

True, I should have said ONLY. I don't think the shortfall from the ECB for one less player will make a huge difference if we are losing approx. £300k a season :( This new development should stop the rot for the time being. It takes the piss when we won the CC and received £100k for what...60+ days toil and a footballer makes that in less than a week. :nono:

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
Given the complete lack of quality English qualified players available (anyone who is potentially Test standard should be ignored because if picked for England we will never see them again), I have no problems with a Kolpak player. I would just regard them as a another overseas player in the same way as Wessels, Miandad and Imran were around at the same time at some point in the late 1970s
In an ideal world everyone would come from the county they play for, but as even Yorkshire gave that up several years ago, that is clearly never going to happen.
There may be an issue regarding the effect of Kolpak on potential English Test players, but that is seperate to SCCC having a winning team. I would far prefer SCCC to win the championship than England win the Ashes, in the same way that BHA win the premiership/anything over England winning the World Cup.
Given the increased power of clubs/franchises generally (esp football Champions League), true international sport as we know it is doomed anyway.
