I think for next season we must bring in Chawla ;;also i would take a punt on s jones on a pay as you play,

Also i would go for Hoggard also for next season if we could get him down here and then plan for 2010/2011 onwards with other pace bowlers .

as at the moment how we are going to get wickets i do not know

High up on the South Downs.
Jones sadly is finished. Hoggard is past it.
Would be better off trying to sign Balcombe from Hampshire.
SCCC produced a generation of good seamers; Lewry, Kirtley, Giddins, RMJ and Law. Don't think the academy is likely to follow this up for a few years.

Somethings got to be done, we have a quality one day team, but our county team is weak in most areas, we'd be lucky to get Chawla back. We also need Goodwin back on form quickly.

I think your wrong there Mona, SCCC Academy are producing some quality fast bowlers and I know one. Lewis Hatchett is a Lewry esq type bowler. A very quick left arm seamer, and his nickname is called Thumper. He used to play for St James, untill he moved to East Grinstead.

Hoggard is past it.

Is that the same Hoggard that's taken 34 wickets at an average of 27 this season? As opposed to our best pace bowler, Collymore, who's managed 24 wickets at 30, or RMJ who's averaging 36 with the ball this season?

We have 10 or 11 seam bowlers at the club right now (I'm not sure whether Keegan's still around) and only one of them has taken a 5-for (in fact, I think there's only one other 4-for) that's really poor.

Sussex won the championship on a small squad but an effective one, now the belief seems to be that quantity is better than quality. There should be a complete clear out of players and sign up a couple of decent ones.

I can't see Hoggard moving this far south, Jones might be a good call if he's not on a lengthy contract - if he's vaguely fit, he'd be a class act. What about Pattinson, he can't get in the Notts side any more, even with two players on test duty?

I think Chawla's a must for next year; maybe we won't need loads of seamers then.

Kev with respect your talking bollocks. Lewis is a good bowler but will never cut it at county level. Sadly producing it at St James U18 level and producing it at Championship div one level is very different

You can't keep players out of sentiment . RMJ and Kirtley have not produced the consistent level of performances to warrant another contract. RMJ has been very much on the fringes this season and Kirtley when he has played has invariably been very expensive.

Liddle has been injured. So what? We cannot carry anyone! He has been at Sussex for three seasons and done nothing!

Sandri's bowling at Horsham was rubbish and given what I have seen of him this season I'm not impressed!

Arafat for an overseas player has been very poor! I don't expect him to return in 2010.

With Lewry it is just a case of going for one year too many.

What have these six done this season? Very little!

This is the poorest seam attack I have seen in 45 years of supporting Sussex and a radical rethink IS required!

Aga and Liddle are no better than Sandri! Hatchett and Liddle are injured anyway.

I agree with much of this - although I think you're harsh on RMJ. He had a very good season in 2008 and I think it was fair enough to retain him. His batting helps him keep a place too. But Kirtley and Lewry were mistakes and there were plenty of people saying so at the time, so that's not just hindsight.

The choice of Arafat clearly showed that they had one-dayers in mind. You can't argue that it's bought some success there but I don't think the 4-day game should have been neglected so badly.

This is a poor seam attack - I don't think it's the worst though. In 1972, we had (when Greig and Snow were on test match duty) an ageing Tony Buss, the military medium of Denman and Phillipson, the slow mediume of Mike Buss. We also had Spud Spencer, a fine third seamer but never a spearhead in a million years - that was an awful attack. But this year's runs it close.
