Sussex sign Australian quick
12:06pm Monday 2nd April 2012 in Sport By Steve Hollis

Sussex have completed their search for an overseas player after confirming the signing of Steve Magoffin.

The 32-year-old has agreed terms to join the county with his work permit expected to come through in time for the second Championship match at Lancashire.

Magoffin has played in England previously for Worcestershire in 2008 as well as playing one game for Surrey in 2007.

The 6ft 4in seamer boasts an impressive first class return of 247 wickets at an average of 26.62 and is also a decent lower order batsman with an average of 19.42.

Sussex turned to Magoffin after seeing a deal to bring New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee to Hove fall through at the last minute.

Shame we couldn't have got Mitchell Johnson, we all know a song for him.......

I think Mitchell would have been OK.

He is not in the Australian team at present and Sussex have done quite well getting the best out of 'damaged' players.

Also if he can get his line right, he does swing it at pace, just against England, with the exception of the pitch at the WACA he has been shite in 9 tests.

Johnson wasn't a totally serious suggestion, however on what I saw of him at the MCG I would LOVE Sussex to have signed Peter Siddle. Run in all day guy with a proper Fast Bowlers Attitude!

He really couldn't be anything, but Australian, could he?

From what I've heard about Beer, the season where he played a lot of t20 absolutely ruined his bowling and without knowing the technicalities this basically meant that he wasn't suitable for 4 day cricket, hence why he didn't play any last year. Although with Rayner leaving I thought it strange that a spinner wasn't signed, so maybe Beer has sorted it out.

Bound to happen to certain younger players. t20 is anti cricket and should be left to ex-pros and celeb charity matches.

At 32, he could be either said to be at his peak or just past his best, time will tell. However, what happened to the days when we had real CLASS overseas players ? Maybe i'm living in the past but this guy would probably not get on the same square as Imran khan, Gehan Mendis, Michael Bevan or Kepler Vessels.

I heard that Beero's very highly thought of around Sussex. They are just nurturing his talent. Wouldn't expect to see much of him this season either.
