I think we have to bat them out of the game, which might mean 2 overs at them tonight. 32 overs left in the day could yield another 180 runs which puts us 450 ish ahead.

Not up with the rules now but if we batted another 25 overs would that still leave us to bowl 7 even taking into account the break between innings. Or even 29 leaving 3 overs for them to face.

I would declare and leave them 30 mins to bat tonight. 2 wickets could be invaluable more so than 20 extra runs.

Sussex have scored 216 from 38 overs, RR 5.68.

What sort of carrot are you suggesting would be worth dangling with 128 overs left in the match?

400 really ought to be more than enough. We can comfortably achieve that and leave 10 overs to bowl tonight. A draw is little use - the table is such that you've got to give every chance of the win - giving Derbyshire a glimmer of hope is probably no bad thing.

If we could knock off another quick 60-75 and then hopefully 1 or 2 wickets this evening before close.

That would be madness.

You're advocating declaring with a lead of 320 runs, and giving them 100 overs to chase them

Possibly. It isn't declaration bowling though - the only four bowlers they've used, were the four main bowlers in the Sussex first innings.

Yes, bowling is fairly tight but I think that its a good wicket and 300 would be gettable batting 4th in a day. Derbyshire might well be comfortable chasing that or if a couple of wickets tumble, batting out for the draw.

So you would set them 340 odd to win in 100+overs, when we have been scoring at 5.6 an over ?

I would be happy to have them chasing 350 as I believe that we have the bowlers to hold them up on the 4th innings. also they would think it achievable so may be careless. As somebody else said a draw is no good to us, we need a win and a defeat is not much worse than a draw. so go for it.

You offered them 320 a few minutes ago. Why 350?

I think you are missing a bit of the nuance of this. You are absolutely correct about offering them an achievable target, so that they play a few shots, rather than closing up and becoming harder to dismiss. You must strike the right balance though - the problem with your 320 from 100 overs target is that it can be achieved at such a slow rate that they wouldn't need to take any risks.

Commentators agreeing with the conservative captains that 350 is too low as the boundary's very short. I think we need to entice them to hit out.

We need to eek out a win with the other results. That's why I think we need to declare before the upper target and trust the bowlers to do the job. Leaving it too long may not give us the time to bowl them out.

I would’ve liked to see Archer promoted tbh, with instructions to swing the bat at every opportunity.

Well played Salt. He’s developing nicely.
