They'll be more watching at the village green as their won't be any cricket at Hove

I lose track of which overseas is available at what point but for at least the first few Championship games of the season the team will look something like;

Clark
Alsop
Pujara
Simpson
Carter
FHP
Coles
Carson
Karvelas
Seales

Solid batting lineup on paper but not a lot of wickets.

But if you add Robinson to that it starts looking like a decent Div 2 side. Seales and Robinson COULD be a potent combinatin but I guess it's more likely, for a few reasons, that it'll be one of the other.

The accounts for 2023 are, sadly, a gloomy read. An operating loss of £122k (profit of £440k in 2022) attributed to lower matchday spend. Also three floors of commercial office space not let with little prospect of that being addressed in the short term. I don't think there's a concert scheduled for this year. The treasuer makes comment that they are trying to manage losses by 'non replacement of departing staff'. Batsmen and bowlers perhaps?

That's worrying. Investing in commercial office space in 2024 is like investing in the UK's canals in 1860, that horse has long since bolted and isn't coming back.

And Bertie Foreman had a good winter in grade cricket. Poor Archie Lenham is falling a bit behind.

We have Dan Ibrahim's brother coming through the ranks too, I saw him as a kid and he was a very useful spinner.

He is indeed and still very much a kid still. One to watch. Could well be close to Preston Nomads 1st XI this year .

Yeah. I wasn't trying to imply he's one for this year or the next couple but definitely for the future.

That's worrying. Investing in commercial office space in 2024 is like investing in the UK's canals in 1860, that horse has long since bolted and isn't coming back.

I believe they may now have to consider switching some of the commercial space in the redeveloped Sussex Cricketer to residential from commercial. I doubt that is a quick fix.

As we have a new thread I'll repeat my moan.

Last August there was a total of about 30hrs of Sussex men's first team cricket played in Sussex.

Remarkably the shit weather had nothing to do with this as the only game that was shortened was the epically crap 38 over game against Gloucestershire where the Sussex reply of 145 lasted 25 overs for a 166 run defeat.


I've not taken up membership for this season.

Robinson will be keen to get back in England reckoning and the ECB will want him to get some overs in, so I'd expect to see him playing. We may even see the lesser-spotted Archer, although his four day appearances may be limited.

I don't think the lesser spotted Archer can fly any more.

Gallows humour alert - the Sussex CCC 2024 thread is open.

Last season’s county championship campaign was bizarre. We only won a handful of games but still nearly got promoted. Nothing peculiar about the short form stuff though - we were simply a mess.

A few have flown the nest, including highly-rated Ali Orr, the lesser-spotted George Garton and controversial CEO Rob Andrew.

The string of quality signings head coach Paul Farbrace was hoping for never materialised. Although veteran John Simpson is, or at least was, one of the tidiest keepers in the game.

Simpson and new allrounder Danny Lamb will need to be at their best because Division Two is looking as competitive as ever, with Northants and Yorkshire likely to be pushing for the title.

On paper, we arguably have a weaker squad than last year but don’t despair. Ollie Robinson’s England career is looking iffy, meaning he could be playing for Sussex with a point to prove. He is potentially the answer to a familiar problem over recent years - the inability to take 20 wickets.

Was surprised to see that Sussex CCC kit manufacturer this season is Nike, apparently the only proffesional CC in the Northern Hemisphere to wear the the swoosh

Middlesex have had a Nike kit for a couple of seasons but have gone for cheapy Castore from this year.

Anyway, four weeks until the championship begins, the long range weather forecast looks OK (if you bring several layers). Tom Haines under performed last year and I hope might be one to watch this season. Maybe the pitches at Hove will be a bit less batter-friendly; left-handed batter Daniel Hughes who is joining from May for the T20 comp and the rest of the season has just had a brilliant season for New South Wales; Rob Andrew has left; I am more optimistic than you lot.

Good man. The squad is stronger than in recent times. Should get decent 1st XIs out and the 2nd XI will be a better place for player development with people having to work harder to earn selections.
