The Words of "Sussex by the Sea"
1)
Now is the time for marching,
Now let your hearts be gay,
Hark to the merry bugles
Sounding along our way.
So let your voices ring my boys,
And take the time from me,
And I'll sing you a song as we march along,
Of Sussex by the Sea! For

(chorus)
We're the men from Sussex, Sussex by the Sea.
We plough and sow and reap and mow,
And useful men are we;
And when you go to Sussex,
Whoever you may be,
You may tell them all that we stand or fall
For Sussex by the Sea !
Oh Sussex, Sussex by the Sea !
Good old Sussex by the Sea !
You may tell them all that we stand or fall,
For Sussex by the Sea

2)
Up in the morning early,
Start at the break of day;
March till the evening shadows
Tell us it's time to stay.
We're always moving on my boys,
So take the time from me,
And sing this song as we march along,
Of Sussex by theSea. For . .
(chorus)

3)
Sometimes your feet are weary,
Sometimes the way is long,
Sometimes the day is dreary,
Sometimes the world goes wrong;
But if you let your voices ring,
Your care will fly away,
So we'll sing a song as we march along,
Of Sussex by the Sea. For . . .
(chorus)

4)
Light is the love of a soldier,
That's what the ladies say,
Lightly he goes a wooing,
Lightly he rides away.
In love and war we always are
As fair as fair can be,
And a soldier boy is a lady's joy
In Sussex by the Sea. For . . .
(chorus)

5)
Far o'er the seas we wander,
Wide thro' the world we roam;
Far from the kind hearts yonder,
Far from our dear old home;
But ne'er shall we forget my boys,
And true we'll ever be
To the girls so kind that we left behind
In Sussex by the Sea

It is a magnificent anthem for us and summed up the day for me - tears in my eyes by then, I was just so happy.

I was at the bandtand in Eastbourne once just as the band was finishing. Last track after the national anthem? SBTS. Sounded bloody great live.

In Weatherspoons before the game and someone started the tune off in low key and it got louder as the others caught on and sang along before almost the whole pub was involved for the crescendo of "And we're Going Up and We'll Win the Cup for Sussex By the Sea"
Quality!

It was fantastic on Sunday before and after the match, singing SBTS with 30,000 other brighton fans was simply incredible - I will never forget it

Still sends a shiver down the spine even now!
Will never forget it!

GOSBTS found in Northern Ireland, brings a tear to your eye!

That rendition reminds me of some of the 'half-time entertainment' at the Goldstone:cry:

Some ruddy marching band from somewhere or other armed with about 200 of those upright glockenspiels, all out of step, out of time and out of tune.:lol:

On The Ball City is claimed to be the oldest football chant in England, if not the world. The words and tune come from a Norwich City Director (1905-1907), Albert T Smith

It can be heard whenever Norwich play though only the chorus is now sung rather than the whole song.

It is also a VERY BORING song.

The words:-

In the days to call, which we have left behind,
Our boyhood's glorious game,
And our youthful vigour has declined
With its mirth and its lonesome end;
You will think of the time, the happy time,
Its memories fond recall
When in the bloom of our youthful prime
We've kept upon the ball.

Kick off, throw it in, have a little scrimmage,
Keep it low, a splendid rush, bravo win or die;
On the ball City, never mind the danger,
Steady on, Now's your chance,
Hurrah! We've scored a goal
City, City, City.

Let all tonight then drink with me
To the football we love,
And wish it may be successful be
As other games of old,
And in one grand unite toast
Join player, game and song,
And fondly pledge your pride and toast,
Success to the City club.

Kick off, throw it in, have a little scrimmage,
Keep it low, a splendid rush, bravo win or die;
On the ball City, never mind the danger,
Steady on, Now's your chance,
Hurrah! We've scored a goal
City, City, City.

During research for my article on SBTS in the Peterborough programme, Ron Pavey told me about the various bands and the Norman Wisdom words.

The official Goldstone matchday residency was taken by the Haywards Heath Town Prize Silver Band, but every so often there were guest appearances by the youth-based Ambassadors Marching Band who, as someone has said, used massed glockenspiels! Compared with a proper brass - or silver - band, the effect was rather twee.

Norman Wisdom's 'alternative' lyrics had the original end line 'For Sussex by the Sea' replaced by "For Albion by the Shore". These improvements were not regarded as a success, and were quietly dropped.

Is there a full length version anywhere?

I've got the Horsham Borough Band version as an MP3, I've got it on vinyl by the Sandhurst Military Academy Marching Band (sad I know) but neither version will allow ALL verses to be sung.

Anybody know?

I've heard good sung performances of it but these never had the brass band musical accompaniment. And I've never managed to find a band performance of it that allows all the verses to be sung. This includes recordings I've got of it played live at Bonfire events. I've used one of these versions as the opening to a quite different bit of film and the only way I've managed to extend it is by editing the audio track

The club ought to stick that in the match day program each week -so everybody can sing the right words

" we went up and we won the cup", what could be more apt. By the way i'm an ex squaddie in the Queens Regt and it was always played at regimental dinners, links with The Royal Sussex Regt and it was there regimental March. So two reasons to sing
"GOOD OLD SUSSEX BY THE SEA"
