That is shocking, tragic. He was a real talent and what a ridiculously young age.

If it is suicide that is another in a strangely long line of current and ex cricket players who have done the same. I believe there has even been a book brought out about it.

Telegraph report (similar to the BBC one):

Police sources have confirmed they stopped a man who was later found dead on the tracks at Wimbledon Park station but are yet to formally release his identity.

A police spokesman said: “At 4.15am police officers spotted a vehicle being driven erratically on Arthur Road, SW19. Male driver of the vehicle made off on foot. Officers were unable to locate him. At 5.10am body of a man fitting the same description was found on the tracks near Wimbledon Park station. Enquiries are underway to establish identity of the man.”

Arthur Road crosses the District Line in west London.

British Transport police sources this morning confirmed Maynard, son of former England and Glamorgan batsman Matthew, was killed after being struck by a District Line train at 5.10am.

A BTP spokesman said: "BTP officers were called to the line near Wimbledon Park London Underground station on Monday, 18 June after a man was struck by a District line train.

"The incident was reported to BTP at 5.03am and was also attended by Metropolitan Police officers. London Ambulance Service medics attended but the man, believed to be 23 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident was reported to BTP at 5.03am and is currently being treated as non-suspicious. A file will be prepared for the coroner."

Maynard was one of the brightest prospects in English cricket. An attacking batsman, he played a Twenty20 match for Surrey last night against Kent in Beckenham.

He had been likened in style to Kevin Pietersen and toured with the England Lions last winter.

England’s scheduled press conference at the Oval today has been cancelled.

ECB Chairman Giles Clarke said: "This is a very sad day for everyone connected with Surrey County Cricket club and for Glamorgan County Cricket club where Tom spent the early part of his career.

“Tom was a player of enormous potential who had already represented England Lions and had an exciting future ahead of him. Our hearts go out to the Maynard family for their tragic loss and we send them and all Tom's many friends and colleagues within the game our deepest sympathies.”

Surrey have postponed Wednesday’s Twenty match against Hampshire as a mark of respect.

Last week Maynard was disciplined by the club for late night drinking during a championship match against Sussex at Horsham but returned to the side in Beckenham last night batting at number three.

Maynard scored four first-class hundreds with his maiden century made against Glamorgan just months after leaving the club for Surrey following the sacking of his father as head coach.

A side thought that this is the second time that Chris Adams has had to deal with this type of situation.

Driving pissed then did a runner and appears to have tried to cross the tracks legging it away, what a stupid way to die.

A bit presumptuous perhaps, at this stage.
Let us wait and see when further details come out.

The radio news said that he had been stopped for driving erratically earlier.

We already know that. Doesn't mean he was drunk, it doesn't mean he got hit by a train trying to run away. You can't just assume anything, especially in a sensitive case like this.

With you there and it would either be a train or the third rail, whichever. If a train spare a thought for the driver.

What a great shame, a fantastic talent, watched him this season at The Oval against Sussex and his batting was brilliant.

Please can we stop the speculation and just remember Maynard for the talent that he was and the void which will be left in English cricket.

On the day of the post mortum when it was announced that Tom was electrecuted by the live rail, before the tube train hit him, and Surrey, playing their first match, at the same time as the minutes silence before the match, team-mate Kevin Peitersen decides to Tweet his holiday snaps from Africa.
What an absolute big headed, thoughtless twat he is.
