When that was filmed back in 1982, Chas & Dave were probably a bigger draw than Clapton as he was in a bit of a career 'lull' at that point.

Even worse was seeing Jimmy Cricket again - brought back memories of holiday camp entertainment when I were a lad.

On the face of it a curious line up, but there were connections. Chas Hodges was well known to Eric Clapton for his musical pedigree from the '60s and '70s. Well before his time with Chas 'n Dave.

I can recall being a bit surprised to see C&D supporting Eric Clapton at the Brighton Centre on the 'Just one Night' tour in the early 80s. At that time Eric's touring band largely comprised of well established British names, including Albert Lee who previously played with Chas Hodges in 'Heads, Hands and Feet'.

Footage of H,H&F on a recent repeat of the Old Grey Whistle Test shows Chas playing bass (nowhere near the piano!). They were highly regarded, but never quite broke through.

Albert Lee was (and still is) a mean and versatile guitarist in his own right. He often covered for Eric on stage while he was 'under the weather'......ahem. Not Eric's finest period and Albert Lee doesn't get the credit he should.

Chas and Dave supported Zeppelin at their second Knebworth weekend. Now that was truly surreal.

Had lunch with my girlfriend (soft porn cameraman father), Linda Bellingham and the chain smoking Jesus of Nazareth ( Robert Powell) at a well known film studio. I guess she got passive cancer from that meeting. I soldiered on and despite the odd first morning cough and a 10 a day Silk Cut habit, sadly she didn't.
As a sign of respect , my turkey was Bisto free on the 25th.
Not withstanding, I did tune into Sky Sport with 5 mins remaining and see our equaliser before the game ended. At the time,my brother in law, a senior Sky Exec was stunned. So was I.

Chas and Dave seemed like a novelty act - and it seemed quite bizarre for them to have supported Eric Clapton. Let alone Led Zep! I suppose it shows the niche they had created for themselves in British music at that time. I've certainly seen far worse support acts over the years.

Thank you for referencing Led Zep. No support act needed when I saw them on the 'Physical Graffiti' tour at Earls Court in '75. IMO they were at their peak. 3 hours, full on and 'kin loud too, completely magnificent. Now Chas and Dave on that bill would have been a joke :lolol:

There was a documentary about them a year or so ago. Before they found their feet as Chas & Dave, both played with many of the greats of the sixties and seventies. Chas was a well known session musician playing with Jerry Lee Lewis, Richie Blackmore and Albert Lee among others. It was playing with them when he met Dave.

Chas & Dave are often written off as a novelty act but are as good musicians as any in the business. Amongst the musos guesting on their latest album are
Martin Taylor, Jools holland & Albert Lee. Go to one of their gigs and have a great night out.

I was there. And yes it was surreal.

As others have written though, both are widely respected musicians with a long pedigree.

One of them (not sure which) was in the house band of legendary producer Joe Meek, along with Ritchie Blackmore, I believe.

They were at both the Zeppelin Knebworth gigs.
I have never forgiven them for an early morning rendition of "When you wake up in the morning wiv a bangin' in yer 'ead" on August 4th 1979 ! The gates got broken down early and the crowd rushed into the bowl at Knebworth. The organisers shoved Chas'n'Dave on early to appease the crowd - it didn't work for me !!! I bitterly regretted having got tickets for that weekend as Keith Richards' New Barbarians were on the following week but, all those years ago, I couldn't afford £7.50 tickets two weeks on the trot (plus the cost of getting there and booze). Good gig though but a much nastier atmosphere than the Stones 3 years previous

Loved the special, and yearned for the fug of smoke, proper plastic ashtrays with Toby or Skol motive and real pint pots, I must say though anyone over 60 years old morphed into the same looking person.
