Friends of mine regenerated a past family name.

He didn’t like his dad’s family
She didn’t like her dad’s family

… so they took the maiden family name of a long deceased great grandmother and started that name afresh.

My father’s side of the family changed their family name. It was double-barreled but my grand father, a Union man on the railways, dropped one of the barrels as it was a too bourgeois.

I would definitely change my surname if I was him.
