I feel like playing Gross at RB hasn't been exposed until last night when you really saw what happens when a CM/AM is played at RB and has considerable defending to do. He couldn't do it and that's not really a criticism, it's a specialised position and he was totally stripped bare.

Fair play to Everton though, they scored early which set the game up perfectly for them and they managed it to absolute perfection. It was just a freak game, caused by an early goal tipping the balance in their favour but you still have to recognise how efficient, dangerous and ruthless they were.
March should have started to cover Gross. Don’t get wee Billy not starting either and to leave it until we were 3-0 down just seemed ridiculous to me before making any changes. Bad day at the office for RDZ he’s deflecting talking about mentality he made a blunder pure and simple.

I wonder if it is because we play Gross as an inverted FB like TAA at Liverpool is playing more of these days. Almost doing away with a RB. Clearly Dyche saw it as a weakness and ripped us a new one.

Maybe Billy doesn’t have 2 tough games in 4 days in him yet

He got subbed against Manure anyhow after a good discussion last night are we really ready for Thursday/Sunday football we aren’t coping very well as it is. We either need a far bigger squad of quality players which ramps the wage bill or really work on the fitness levels over the summer.

It's easy in hindsight isn't it. Ultimately, the match was totally changed after 34 seconds when they scored on the break. If that hadn't happened, we'd have been able to control the game we usually would and they wouldn't have had something to defend. As it goes, they had a headstart and were able to play their anti-football with something to defend and they had enough quality on the counter attack to take advantage. The reality is, the game got away from us but that starting 11 could have been good enough to comfortably win the game, but it went the other way. That can happen, we'll move on.

Maybe March's hamstring was flagged by the physios as a potential problem over 90 minutes, hence starting on the bench?

With all the games in quick succession at the tail end of an incredible season, there must be a bunch of them in the 'red zone' who need their minutes carefully managed to try to avoid injury.

I sat watching Webster walking forward with the ball on countless occasions in the first half yesterday, apparently clueless what to do because Everton just let him do it and thought maybe that's the end of De Zerbi Ball as we know it. We didn't seem to have a plan B.

Maybe, but perhaps really only works if you are already 2-0 up

I watched the Leicester v Everton game and Dwight McNeil to be fair was their only real threat rampaging down the wing in my mind Gross had no chance against him. I get it happens we will lose games yet the line up really played into their hands. Typically being Brighton we may go and beat Arsenal who knows.

It's certainly not "the end of De Zerbi Ball". There are a lot more ball playing / attacking / pressing teams in the Premier League this season and our style suits all those teams. Burnley under Kompany won't be bus parkers either.

Tactics will adapt slightly as we progress because they always do. RDZ is a tactics nerd. But his basic desire for patterns, for quick passing, for playing through a press, for using wide players to create overloads will remain.

What really did us was conceding so early and, as much as I love him, that was Mitoma's fault with a terribly lazy touch on the left wing to gift Everton the ball.

Patterns will be back, the press drills and rondos will be used and we'll remain aggressive and attacking. It's worked far more than not this season.

Also worth noting, as my son did yesterday, that almost every team except Newcastle, City and Arsenal have been absolutely thrashed al least once this season. Spurs conceding five in 20 mins, United losing 7-0, Fulham getting done 4-1, us beating Liverpool 3-0 (and should have been 6) and Chelsea 4-1 just thinking about the teams either in the top ten or big six. And there were 21 goals in three PL games yesterday. Attacking football is where it's at.

That’s what I’ve seen almost every game Webster Dunk or Colwil walking with the ball sometimes even putting their foot on it.
I didn’t think anything was much different to any other game in respect to centre halves in possession, most opposition tend to back off that. With only DCL upfront and 5 in midfield made it doubly difficult for the centre halves like you said no plan b until the 2nd half and March gave us some width on the right and things changed a bit.

We have adapted our build up in many games this season. One solution has been the inverted fullback on either side to overload the midfield. Another is going direct to the wings. Unfortunately we were hit hard and fast yesterday and it made it very difficult to find solutions against a physical, tall team sitting deep. We will learn from this and injuries aside we will be fine.

A complete disaster for gross yesterday, and also his talents are wasted in that position. Criminal to use caciedo at right back.

Webster has played there before for other teams, and I like him , dunk and colwill playing together. Any reason why Roberto doesn't fancy it ?
Did we use Caicedo at RB? - I thought it was Gross. Radio Sussex seemed to think so anyway. I Thought (after were 2-0 down) we could have changed to brinh in Colwill at CB alongside Dunk and moved Webster to RB (as many have suggested) or - IMHO - bring on Van Hecke, who is fresh, full of energy, bursting for his opportunity to get into the team and make a point (see under 'Gilmour') and has played RB before.

McNeil is excellent on occasion (usually the occasion of playing against Brighton) but can also go missing or punt every pass/cross into the stand. What really played into their hands was conceeding in the first minute. Chasing a game against a Dyche team is the biggest disaster in football, we were very naive and got a spanking but we'll learn from it and bounce back. I think Arsenal will be very wary of playing against us.

When Webby first joined us, his ability to stride forward with the ball was his best asset.

Though this is far risker in the 4 at the back in which we now play and I don't think RDZ wants to encourage this at all.

Decent summary. Adding to this, when March came on he stayed out wide which gave an option to spread play either way. Buonanotte kept drifting inside to the same spaces Gross was also filling. That might have been because nobody seemed to want to pass to him but even so, it meant we didn't have our usual balance on the wings.

Honestly staggers me that some think Webster should/can play right back, he would literally be our last player we have I would play there, he doesn’t have the mobility or pace to get up and down.

The whole idea of blaming Gross for yesterday I find bizarre, he was exposed but the entire team was, what about Estupinan not tracking back for both the first two goals? Easy to pick the player who is playing out of position and blame him, Gross has handled Murdyk, Rashford etc this season when paired with March.

Yesterday the entire team were guilty of being over confident and that meant the team (not just one player) played at a half arsed pace and didn’t bother covering back like they normally would, how many times did we see Caicedo haring back to cover for a full back yesterday like we normally do? We didn’t, because he couldn’t be arsed and had a poor attitude towards the game, same as the rest of the them.

RDZ got the team selection drastically wrong as well, but that’s besides the point, the players didn’t apply themselves, all of them, not just gross. Gross normally works so well at RB because our full backs step into midfield but yesterday there was zero tracking back.
