Support acts that proved better than the main concert

Right subject but left field somewhere. Saw Kylie last week (escorted Wife) and DJ Oliver Heldens was mixing tunes for an hour and boy did he misread the crowd. Same bumping beat and no one moved despite being stood up.

Sometime in the early sixties...Hippodrome. The Beatles were good, but Roy Orbison was brilliant.

AC/DC and The Who, so I've heard. 1980 Wembley. Anyone go? This gig is one I would attend if I could go back in time along with Rage Against the Machine and Suicidal Tendencies at Hammersmith. I dropped the ball twice here.

I remember in 1979 at Southampton Gaumont, I went to see Judas Priest.
There was a little known support band on that emptied the bar within minutes of starting and got 5 encores .
That was Iron Maiden, they remain to this day my favourite band

I saw that tour at Hammersmith. Maiden were superb, luckily for Priest they were also excellent.

Belly were first up, that evening - for me, they were the best of the three bands, although it was a fairly relaxed set, and people were mostly sat on the grass watching them. Blur's set was great - it was just after Girls and Boys, I think - lots of energy - lots of jumping around in the crowd.

REM, played the Monster album, and it was bang average.

Magnapop were first up, actually. Michael Stipe was a big fan and later produced one of their albums.

Also, Sleeper played on the Sunday along with The Cranberries and Radiohead.

Five Finger Death Punch at Wembley last year, they were supporting Avenged Sevenfold who are one of my favourite bands, but put on a great show

Magnapop were first up, actually. Michael Stipe was a big fan and later produced one of their albums.

Also, Sleeper played on the Sunday along with The Cranberries and Radiohead.

Oh. I must have missed them. I bow (as always) to your musicnerdness. I'll keep my own pedantry to football in future!

The most memorable thing about the entire night actually, was the absolute meltdown on the M25 on the way home. Blocked to the extent that we ended up wandering about chatting to people (at 3am).

Beth Orton and Charlatans supporting Paul Weller at V Chelmsford in 1996? Beth was just heavenly on a side stage mid-afternoon, with a pitifully small crowd. Charlatans were imperious on the main stage just before Weller. Bobby Gillespie deputising on keyboard because of the tragic death very recently prior to the gig. Weller was bored, you could just tell, played it by numbers, the crowd were full of nobbers, Weller FC t-shirts and the like and it was just dull. The scales fell from my eyes about Weller from that gig onwards.

I went on that Sunday and it was a cracking day out.

I remember hearing about that, but I think we had gone by train so were unaffected. I do remember the whole day just being a bit turd though, from the lack of screens to see what was actually happening on stage, to the queues for a beer, to baking hot sunshine and a complete absence of shade, to the two CDs on repeat throughout the whole day (Patti Smith and Television)...

Give me a dark, cramped pub with 100 other gig-goers over a big venue every time.

August 18 1979 - the same day as our first ever game in the old Div 1, 0-4 vs Arsenal. Hugh Cornwell made a point of announcing the result to the crowd during The Stranglers' set - one of only two things he said during a piss-poor performance. AC/DC were also pretty average on that day. The external speakers failed mid-set and the band carried on for about 2 songs because the stage speakers still worked and they couldn't hear the crowd whistling.
Nils Lofgren was the second-best on the bill.

The Who were awesome.

REM aren't coming out of this thread too well but I should point out that at the above 3 gigs they were excellent, they just had rather splendid support acts.

Your recollections of the day tally exactly with mine. Apart from the CD's bit. How on EARTH do you remember that!?
