I'm fascinated (when I say fascinated, I of course mean amused) to see how Vieira has transformed that Palace squad from one which looked quite decent for the first half of last season, to where they are now. After Uncle Roy retired, they knew they had to have a massive rebuild, so got rid of a lot of the old codgers from the squad and invested in talented younger players like Eze and Elise. The future was bright, we were told. Eze was supposedly on the fringes of the England squad before he did his Achilles and Olise was lighting up games and beating defenders with ease.

Now look at them. Eze hasn't been the same player since coming back from the injury. Olise just strolls around looking pretty with the ball and takes a nice free kick, but he's not exactly busting his backside to chase opponents down. Zaha is nowhere near the winger he used to be, and although he still chips in with a few goals, seems to spend more of every game throwing his arms in the air and whining at his teammates for failing to recognise his greatness in their passing or at referees for seeing through his petulant rolling around. Tyrick Mitchell, having laughably been given his England opportunity under Southgate's Every Palace Player Gets A Cap scheme, is now showing himself up for the weak defender and uninspiring attacker that he is. Is anybody genuinely going to be queuing up to buy these players from Palace in the summer?

I just want to show my appreciation for Vieira for taking what was, on paper, a talented squad of flair players and turning them into the 2023 reincarnation of Roy Hodgson's Bus-Parking Bad Boys. It takes a lot to suck the life out of a player like Eze (who I quite admired, despite his obvious affiliation) and turn him into a journeyman, so here's to you, Super Pat, and may you keep on doing exactly what you're doing

I was looking at the thread on here from when he was appointed because I was looking for comments from someone. I can't remember who, pretty sure it was one ours, but I remember them posting about how Vieira had a good first year in his last job, then a bad second year leading to him going, and predicted something similar. The appoint thread was full of almost instant failure predictions, so it must be in one of the other threads that are far too long for me to bother trawling through.

I said to the Bobkin Jnrs last night, all the rivalry aside, objectively speaking it must be soul-destroying to watch that lot every week. A horrible mix of theatrics and thuggery, with little evidence of 'style' anywhere on the pitch...

Guehi and Anderson and Guita are passable PL players, but you're right, nobody is quieing up to take them.

And then they are filling the rest of their line up with blatant Championship players like Schlupp, Ward, Clyne, Ayew, Hughes.

I think that it really is key that he didn't replace Gallagher. He bought Doucoure to play Kouyate's defensive role, but didn't get anyone in to push them forward in the centre. The style he wants to play needs someone to lead the press and the likes of Hughes, Schlupp, Milivojevic couldn't do it. The attackers are subsequently playing a lot in tight spaces and, only Zaha is good enough to do that regularly. He signed Lokonga and Ahamada in January, but neither of them have suggested that they can push them forward either.

I'm interested in how badly some teams struggle if the key part of their plan is missing. Bielsa's Leeds without Phillips as quarterback, Liverpool without Van Dijk's ability to cover several defensive positions and let others bomb forward. Vieira's Palace without a Gallagher type player seems another example. As @edna krabappel has implied, Gallagher is not great, but he looked it often in Vieira's team last year. Like Phillips, he has built a reputation on playing one role in one system. Just as the system doesn't work as well without him, he is nowhere near as effective when asked to do something else.

Palace will survive this season and, if they have any sense, they won't sack Vieira. My worry is that the influx of players at Chelsea might encourage Gallagher to move on. Getting him or, someone with similar strengths, would make the young attacking players they have bought a lot more effective.
