Seriously, the level of misinformation and ignorance regarding sunscreens/lotions/creams etc is quite scary. If you really don't know or understand the correct way to buy and use sun creams, do yourself a favour, find out. It is not difficult, it will make your holidays far more comfortable, and it may well save your life.

Probably too late for the likes of me and thee tho Phil. The damage was done earlydoors when we were nippers and the healthy implications were either not known or not communicated. I can remember being a kid on holiday in Spain and having giant water blisters across both shoulders like epaulettes. One of the preferred modes of tanning at the time for pasty Brits was (seriously) olive oil. Sake!

I grew up in Cyprus from ages 5-11, I really don't remember having sun cream applied to me, it was in the mid-late 70s. I do know that we didn't sit out in the midday sun at all, that was time for a nap, or sitting under shade having lunch etc. Always used to wear a shirt & hat unless swimming. I used to be as brown as your hat as a nipper, I can tan real easy now too, but tend to sit under a brolly nowadays, always use P20 and keep an eye on any moles, touch wood, all good so far. My brother (who lives there now) had a mole removed a couple of years ago that was benign. Now that the dangers are known, and products are available to protect, there really is no acceptable excuse other than ignorance.

In the same way as you check your balls and boobs boys and girls, check your moles too. And don’t give in to chance, use decent SPF rated protection; you’ll still get a tan.

Apparently this stuff also goes off so you have to buy new every year - kerching

I watched a program a year or so ago, (Watchdog?) and they said quite the opposite, that the sun creams they had tested didn't lose any of their effectivness over time, alsthough they did say that some of the prducts didn't actually provide the level of protection they claimed.

Try using P20, one application in the morning, all day long protection (SPF20). 1 bottle lasts me about a week when on hols, £20 a bottle. Been using it for a 7 or 8 years now, never got sunburnt, and no slimey skin either

Same here, can stain light colours though but a small price to pay

Superdrug usally have good offers, like buy one get 2 free. I got some of the factor 15 clear liquid spray before I went on my travels with work (currently in Malawi) and it seems to have done the trick.

The problem I have found is getting burnt and very red on a cloudy day here, as the UV rays still go through the broken clouds, so my walk at lunchtime to the local restaurant or even to the truck results in a decent tan.

...but there is something about 'rip-off Britain' in regards to drugs and the like. Here you can buy a big box of condoms for 70p (the savlon was right next to them in the supermarket), and you can buy 200 paracetamol for something like £1 as well. Also, a weeks course of antibiotics cost 50p!

In Winchester?

I will vouch for the P20 stuff, applied it at about 7am yesterday before the marathon, was out in the sun all day, sweating buckets and chucking countless bottles of water over myself, and am not sunburnt at all. Have a few tan lines from my clothing and shoes, but importantly no sunburn. It wasn't cheap but saved me having to stop and constantly reapply normal suncream.

Now see here, I don't see it as that expensive, as had been said, you can get it for around £15 a bottle. A bottle lasts me a week when I am away, and there is quite a bit of me to cover. I use it every day, works out at 2 and a bit quid a day, seems massively reasonable to me.

Interesting that there are such divided opinions on suncare. Being Australian, I've seen a good deal of people fry themselves stupid and I've seen the lilly whites as well.

I don't use sun cream as I don't believe that most of the ingredients are good for us. For a while they even contained aluminium!! So what I/we do is cover up well. I wear spf clothing (greatest invention ever especially for kids) and large brimmed hats, big umbrella over our bbq area and the like.

Just my thruppence...
