But as mentioned, my cheaper sunglasses are providing the protection from UV so I'm not quite sure what point you're trying to make.

You seemed to be suggesting my buying cheaper sunglasses was damaging my eyes.

Is it a possibility? Based on?

It feels like you've made an assumption I am buying a product which isn't providing the protection that the expensive ones are......but the moment that isn't true, rather than perhaps saying "oh right, i didn't realise that, that's interesting" you've doubled down on it.

If people want to buy expensive sunglasses then great. I personally wouldn't as I know I'll destroy them. I instead buy the cheapest I can and esnure they provide the adequate UV protection. But don't then try and make up a story that I'm seemingly destroying my eyes. I could suggest sitting in front of NSC for 60k posts since 2009 might not be the best thing to do for ones eyes, but I wouldn't want to be giving advice I can't back up.

I'm not gonna lie. I'm in EXACTLY the same place.

Bracelet thing and first tattoo for me last year (the kids DoBs in Roman numerals on my left shoulder, and considering a seagull right now, just like you) and this year I'm buying my first pair of expensive sun glasses after.making do with £5 tat since forever.

I feel reassured.

£10 pair for me thanks. Why spend money on something which will upset me when they inevitably get destroyed.

A classic. I have three in my collection. Two regular lens but in different sizes, and another in large with polarised lenses.

My mates and I first bought Wayfarer’s in the mid 80’s. £50 then, I think high street opticians were the source.

I like a nice pair of Prada sunnies. I remember when I lived in Oz we went to the Hawkesbury River, and I was holding my daughter who must have been two years old. She took my pair of Pradas off my head and threw them into the river, and then said "Oh Daddy, your glasses fell into the river". She's almost 15 now and I still remind her of it, and that she owes me £200

Middle age well and truly kicked in which means expensive varifocals for daily wear which in turn means way too expensive to have varifocal shades made up as well. The solution is getting fashionable frames for my normal glasses and and then paying for the lenses that go dark in the sun.

I've had decent glasses in the past but ultimately not worth it as invariably they get lost or broken.

For the true top level mid life crisis signal surely a ridiculously powerful motorbike with fancy leathers is the go to purchase?

I have a growth on my eye from sun damage which cannot be removed because it will grow back again and again. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

I own virtually nothing of value and have relatively simple tastes. I'm currently sat at work in a t-shirt from George at ASDA and some Tesco jeans that I bought as a temporary measure 4 years ago. I, however, love an expensive, decent pair of sunnies. My Vuarnet legend originals work perfectly for sport (golf/cricket) and look the part as well. Even in a George T-Shirt.

You may have got lucky, you may not

Cheap sunglasses may advertise that they have UV protection, but they are not specific about UVA and UVB protection. Spend time researching types of sunglasses and what percentage of UV rays they protect your eyes from.

I'm not expert but my understanding is that all sunglasses sold in the UK and Europe must offer UV protection, this means UVA and UVB. You just have to ensure it has the CE or UV400 mark.

So, whether you're spending £3 or £300, your eyes should be safe. There is some variation, with some offering a tad more protection than others but that's not to say an expensive brand is better.
