Sunderland to make derisory bid for Bridders

If Bridcutt really wants to go and play for Gus there is no point in keeping him. It may be a good financial move but there is no room for favouritism at Sunderland as there was here, especially in a relegation battle.

The way Gus wanted him to play in the Championship suited the Championship, as a security blanket, but against Prem sides he needs more strings to his bow because being predictable he will be targeted and taken out of the game.

Maybe the fact that Bridcutt and Gus share the same agent is a good reason to cut him loose but I hope he will think for himself, stay here and develop his game under Oscar rather than being on a Poyet diet of clear up and side and backwards passes.

I don’t think we should persuade him to stay but I think Gus and his agent will be doing their best to persuade him to go. Ultimately it is Bridcutt's choice but I don't think being a one manager player is good for any player because you need variety, not being wrapped up in cotton wool.

I agree. I fear Liam may get swallowed up a bit in a PL relegation battle. He'll do well for them next year though in The Championship... and that's a shame.

I think we'd take anything over £3m, which for a defensive midfielder is a reasonable amount.

Wouldn't be at all surprised if Bloom holds out for a little more following the kerfuffle that occurred last season with Gus though.

I don't begrudge Liam his move, if and when it comes. But I think some fans are at risk of underestimating his importance to us. It isn't just the work he does - it's the confidence that he imparts to those around him. We're always better when he's playing.

He deserves a crack at the Premier League, but hopefully he can do better than Sunderland.

Our club isn't exactly short for cash either. For that reason we won't let key players go cheaply, unless Liam wants to go. No point in keeping an unhappy player.

I think Sunderland would want him to help retain their status in the prem, don't you?

Also, another thing against us is that I believe Poyet and Bridders have the same agent!!!

That said, £2m would be an absolute steal.

Absolutely sure that if in fact Gus does go in for Liam he'll want him ... like yesterday. Sunderland are in the doo doos and not a chance they'd let Brighton use him to go up whilst they may go down. And besides how would that scenario fit in with Liam's Premier ambitions.
There's sadly always a chance any team might lose quality players. And we could of course lose him, but I'm not sure Sunderland would be a choice he would make. A mid to top team would be a far far better option. There are more than a few clever heads at The Amex to remind him of the risk he'd take. Roll on February we might see the way forward more positively.

There is always a premium attached to Jan signings unless the player is out of contract the following summer. I think there will also be a Gus premium too of around 1/2m. The article states we'd be looking for a fee nearer 5m and I have to agree although the final figure may be closer to 3.5m/4m with add-ons. I'm quite surprised by the criticism of Bridcutt, with some on this thread thinking he is playing like a man who is leaving the club. Yes, he has set himself very high standards in the last few seasons but let's let him get back to full match fitness before we judge him, he needs more games, thats all. There have been more than enough glimpses at Bournemouth and against Leicester that indicate he has still got the class and commitment we all so admire. I hope he sticks with us and leads us to promotion.

Hasn't he been our player of the season 2 years in a row?

2 million. Get F***ed Gus!

I wonder how high Sunderland's roof is after the Di Canio fiasco.

We turned down £5 million for Buckley last January, I really cannot imagine we would accept £1 million for Bridcutt this January.

Bridcutt doesn't need anymore strings to his bow because he is a master at what he does - and if played correctly he doesn't need to do anything more than that. Gus can help him reach the highest level in football, it would be excellent move for him.

He has only had one shot on goal in the Championship and that was under Oscar, he may be a master at what he does but he is not a complete player yet.

It's pretty much what we should expect, not the amount we want but a Championship defensive midfielder will never command a huge fee.

Edit. Loving the thumbs downs for being honest

£3M minimum. £3.2 even. But why move there?

Aside from:

- Premier League football (we aren't even in a playoff spot yet.)
- Chance to work with a manager who got the best out of him, in a system he is used to
- At least double his weekly wage with a signing on fee as well
- Play in front of 40,000 loud fans every week.
- Less distance to travel for his international meets!!!!

Look out for interest from Norwich & West Brom being flushed out by this bid. As you say, something over £3m will probably be tempting. I think he's worth plenty more than that but he's a Champinship DMC, not a striker.

I agree that Tony should be making a montage of Gus's comments whilst Albion manager about Bridcutt's quality. Gus's own comments make a mockery of the £2 million valuation.

However, I think there is a deal to be done here. We have a surplus of central midfielders. We have an ageing defence and are heavily reliant on Ulloa for goals. We've not replaced Vicente and there are question marks about Buckley's form. Given that Barber has already wielded the knife to slash costs and increase revenues then I think the time is right to sell certain players.

You wonder where Bridcutt would fit into Poyet's plans. He certainly won't add goals or creativity, and considering Sunderland have 3 clean sheets in their last 5 league matches it suggests that Poyet is sorting it out defensively. I can't see Bridcutt being central to his plans because he needs to spend what money he has on creators and goalscorers.

What Bloom needs to decide is if he's ready to sell or not. If he is then he needs an alternative bidder to bid up the price. Fulham have the worst defensive record in the Prem, so I think that might be a good fit for Liam, particularly as Scott Parker is ageing and injury prone.

It is quite common knowledge that Liam wants to go to a prem club. TB turned down an offer for less than what Sunderland have been quoted as offering during pre season. Liam has also turned down a new deal to stay with us.
Ultimately, if the player wants to go then we should get as much for him as we possibly can and wish him all the best. He is worth whatever Tony will accept and what Sunderland or any other club are willing to pay. The more likely scenario is that the deal will be undisclosed anyway so any speculation should be taken with a pinch of salt.
Rightly or wrongly the players hold all the aces these days so if Liam gets an acceptable offer then he'll be gone in January.

He's been fantastic for us and I for one hopes that he does well wherever he ends up.

I think it is common knowledge that every player wants to play in the Prem, not just Liam ???

Fair point, but it's only the chosen ones that have the ability to make it there. Liam is good enough
