Sunderland fans all gushing about Gus - Deja Vu, anyone?

Reminds me of the time we battered Charlton and Posh away in consecutive weeks. Charlton was magnificent but I missed Posh and that was supposed to be better.

I still don't think any fans truly knows the full story post play-off's but the end result was we lost potentially the best manager this clubs ever had. Oscar's done a great job so far but some of the football we played under Poyet was quite breathtaking.

Things move on and we are still in good health but losing Poyet and now Bridcutt is a major blow, and I can't see us getting anywhere near 4th or the points total of last season.

All fine and dandy.

I was very much Team Poyet, I'm even more Team Oscar for 1 specific reason:-

If Gus was still in charge and he had the season Oscar has put up with, imagine the amount sulking, histrionics, hissy fits and eye fluttering we would have had to put up with.

Very justified, they realise that much as many on here dont like the thought that he is going to be a top manager.

Poyet did a great job for us and there's no reason why he shouldn't do a great job for Sunderland and wherever he goes after that.

Both Mullery and Adams were great managers for us (first time round, anyway!) but Poyet is arguably our most influential manager. He changed our playing style and the playing culture at the club. He took us from pretty much the same as many other teams to one step below the Premiership. And he didn't do that by lashing out somebody else's money, or getting better players than anyone else. Yes he did do some of that but he also improved what we already had in a way I hadn't seen any manager before him do. And nobody can take that away from him, nor should we ever forget it.

But, somewhere deep down inside him, there is a self-destruct gene.

If he has learned from the shenanigans at the end of his reign and can control that self-destruct gene then he could go on to be a really great manager. The football world will be his lobster.

If he can't then it will all end in tears.

Personally, I hope he does. Time will tell.

Spot on. But he'll leave them in a far better position than they were in when he joined them. Every football fan would take that with their club, I would have thought.

Poyet needs an older head to work with him, someone to help him with his PR. Someone to boot him under the table when his motormouth starts working. Someone to cut in and help him when a journalists asks him a question looking for a story. I think he needs someone else in his gang as well as Tanno and Charlie. Then he'll be the complete package.

After all, what exactly has Poyet done for Sunderland except to make them probabilities to become only the second side to escape relegation when bottom at Christmas, bought them Liam Bridcutt, and got them to the League Cup final.

Me too.

Gus is a brilliant manager. I honestly think he will rightly be recognised as a world class manager one day.

I do however think the summer was the right time for him to go. I think both parties had had enough of each other at that point. I don't think he will ever stay more than 3 years at a club again because of his personality, ambition and always wanting a bit more than he has.

I'm this all over. We had a truly magnificent time with him that it will be difficult for any other manager to mirror, since our rise from almost nothingness won't be simply repeated in our newfound steady heaven, and i hold no grudges or blame for us being defeated one night and it all coming to a close. We're a more direct side now and don't seem to glisten and dazzle as we did, but the dream is only slightly on hold at present and once the squad know our system like they knew the last, then we'll be ok and could shockingly impress again.

No surprise, really. They were adrift at the bottom when he took over, they are now 14th. They are in the League Cup final and the Quarter-finals of the FA Cup, and they have just beaten their rivals 3-0 on their own patch. Not a bad start.

Yep. Completely agree. Some EXCELLENT threads where some of NSC finest were adamant Gus would get them relegated and be "out of his depth".

I can understand the logic of disliking him (although I don't personally), but I can't even fathom the logic of thinking he's a bad manager.

Go Gus! The better Sunderland are the closer palace are to relegation. Good results all round on that count today.
