I'm very much of the view that children should not be indoctrinated into the religion of their parents at an early age, and the child should be free to chose to believe in a God based upon their own thoughts and experiences, at an appropriate age.

I couldn't agree more, but how would they make a choice, if they didn't know anything about it? As shown on Nsc, teaching about religion can work both ways, where many posters who went, rejected it.

I went to Sunday School for years - 'encouraged' by my mother mostly who was a churchgoer. Never saw any hint at all of inappropriate behaviour but didn't enjoy it that much apart from the extra activities they organised during summer holidays etc. The leaders were a nice, well-meaning enthusiastic bunch and not overly heavy on the religious education front (it was a United Reform church so not too evangelistic). Stopped when I got to about 11/12 years old as got into fishing instead, which for my old man was usually a Sunday morning thing so that gave me my excuse not to go to church any more. Despite Sunday School and Scouts (also pretty CoE dominant) I never really believed................still agnostic now.

Restrict church visits to 3 reasons now - throwing water, throwing confetti or throwing dirt over someone.

Haven't read the whole thread but the only reason for me would be if it got my kids into a better secondary school.

My son never had the guilt of the lapsed Christian because, in my house, we are all encouraged to accept that there is no god, and life for most of us is a short and brutish existence, followed by eternal darkness, requiring a bit of effort during our brief existence to make a little more comfortable and, dare I say, worthwhile.

I've told my sons they can be whatever they want and believe in whatever they want except for 2 things: if they become socialists or Man U fans then I'm disowning them. Perfectly reasonable, I think.

Taking your child to church, Sunday school or any religious activity is child abuse in itself. Children don't need brainwashing.

I've heard lots of atheists say that despite their rock-solid belief that it's all fairy stories, they still enjoy singing Christmas Carols in church. The high-priest of modern day atheism, Richard Dawkins calls himself "culturally Anglican" (Douglas Murray, another prominent atheist says the same). I think both recognise that there's an important place still for the church and for understanding its historic place in society, the way it has shaped our culture and the role it now has. In other words, it's still possible to disagree completely with it's beliefs but still find comfort with the traditions and ceremonies. Personally, I think the term "cultural Anglican" is a great description and certainly something I feel too although I'm completely agnostic.

Sunday School began in the 1770/1780s and was how most of our ancestors received their education. Robert Raikes realised that the prisons were full of uneducated people and the streets were full of unruly children on a Sunday- the only day that their parents didn't work post the industrial revolution so he started Sunday schools. They are not so popular now but have been replaced in Churches by things like messy Church that are family events which may suit the O/Ps brother/nephew better.

The fact that you didn't go to Sunday school and you didn't get nonced is no proof of cause or effect. There is simply no link. You might as well say that if people have red hair it's because they weren't born on a Wednesday. Equally pointless and inaccurate.

And as previous posters have rightly pointed out (even though it is a fact that doesn't match your prejudices so you choose to ignore it) you are statistically far more likely to have been abused by your father or uncle than by one of the nice ladies that usually run Sunday schools. Anyway, if your brother wants the chance to **** the **** off his good lady on a Sunday afternoon without the risk of being interrupted by the kids, don't be such a dog in the manger!
