I don't think there was any other way. Sure, she was ignorant of the rules, and it does seem harsh, but thems the rules over there. If the punishment was hanging or something, then something should be done, but for 40 lashes? It's not like life imprisonment is it?

I sound like a harsh old bag!

So English lady does something by mistake which offends them and she faces prison and lashes.

Over here we cant say Christmas so we dont offend the Muslims and its a f***ing Christian country.

I say ban all talk of Allah and Muhammed and all temples and Mosques as it offends my Christian beliefs.

This is absolutely pathetic. It goes to show the full extent of how primitive, medieval and wholly unacceptable Islam is. There is no place in the modern world for their backwards thinking. It's a teddy bear for goodness sake. A child named it. Get a life.

She didn't exactly break the law. She asked children to name a Teddy Bear. They came up with the name Mohammed, which is a common name in the Musllim world. She's working in a country, helping people who are not helped by their shite bollocks usless Islamic government. Maybe there should be a violent outcry by posh English kids that somebody dared to name a bear Rupert....

Last time i heard it was just lashes.

You break the law in another country, then i think you should be punished in that country.

this is a joke surely ???, do you honestly think it is acceptable for a woman who has due to an oversight, nothing else allowed a teddy bear to be called a name she should have 40 lashes in a public square probably watched by lots of people

this religion lives in the dark ages, this is totally reprehensible and the government should do everything in its power to stop this abomination

this is the religion that brought you " lashes in a public square for a woman who was gang raped , to the woman however , not the men "

This really isn't newsworthy, is it? Let's face it, we've only heard of this because it involves a British woman. No-one on here would be giving it a second thought or starting a thread on it if the woman in question was Sudanese.

It really is amazing as in England we have to accomodate every Islamic whim required yet they cannot do it for us.

Nuke them after retrieving the teacher is my solution.

As quoted from the BBC "The issue has been a vexed one for Muslims through the ages. Some believe that the name can only be given to boys - to give it to an object is idolatry. Others say that pets and toys can bear the name."

Obviously, the Sudanese proscecutors have felt that it insults their religion, which IS against the law. Therefore, whether we believe it is wrong or not, it is wrong by them.

Please don't call the whole of Islam (and therefore it's follower's beliefs) an abomination. SOME countries and SOME Muslims are stuck in the dark ages, not all.

It is wrong BAG plain and simple, as a UK citizen we have the right to try and prevent this perversion of justice, a teddy bear for fecks sake, there is no way anyone can justify this punishment and if they do try the religion is evil pure and simple

I think it's an oversight, and it's not right in my eyes, however we do need to look to the law of their land, whether we believe it or not. If we say a person didnt understand that stealing was wrong, yet stole something, shouldn't we prosecute them?
