Stupid Question Time - Microsoft Office

Hoping somebody can help!

Just bought Microsoft Office 2010 Home and Student with 3 licences.

Does that mean that you are limited to installing it 3 times only?

What if your computer fucks up a couple of times and you need to reinstall - do you have to buy another?

Can you install it on a friend's computer living at a different address with a different IP address??

Sorry for the questions but I'm thick and confused!

I had a problem with vista a few years ago.When I installed it over 20 times.Just went on line to Microsoft they just gave me a new serial number to install. No probs.

I have Office 2003 and have had to install a compatability pack to download anything sent to me using Office 2010. Is there sufficient on 2010 to warrant buying it or will the pack continue to be sufficient. I expect to be getting quite a few items coming through on line from somebody who uses Office 2010.

There is an alternative to Office 2010 , which is Open Office (freeware) which should be compatible with sending/receiving docs from someone using MS Office 2010. Might be for the geeks only when converting from one to the other though.

2010 (and 2007) are so different interface-wise from 2003 (and 2000/XP) as to make it very hard to change if you're used to 2003.

Office 2003 serves my needs generally so will have to wait and see if the data downloads ok from 2010 if not will have to think again. It downloaded my clubs accounts ok and their accountant uses Office 2010, perhaps it will change everything to office 2003 ok. I am howver thinking about buying a new PC and if so would I be best off to buy the latest office as I assume the new PC wil have the latest windows rather than XP.

I use 2007 at work and 2003 at home - I find 2007 very frustrating to use, I know exactly what I want to do, but without the menu, its a nightmare to actually do it.
That said, like all things, once you know, it gets easier and there are some nice touches in 2007 that are improvements over 2003

You might find you have to phone the automated registration line if you have to reinstall, but it shouldn't cause any major problems. My copy has been installed about 9 or 10 times now due to various rebuilds, reinstalls or upgrades to machines and it still activates fine.

Brian, With the compatibility pack for 2003, it SHOULD be able to view/edit anything from Office 2007 or 2010, although you will be limited to do anything to any documents that use "new" 2007 or 2010 specific features.

It's 99.9% likely that any new machine will have Vista or (probably) the vastly inferior Windows 7.

The interface to both Office 2007 and 2010 are completely different to 2003 (both need the compatibility pack). Unless you really need it I would leave things as they stand. Open Office is free and is compatible but it doesn't have a lot of the features of MS Office. However if you mainly want to do word processing and don't have any need for complex spread sheets it's worth a punt.

What ? Were you drunk when you typed this ? A new machine will have Windows 7 rather that the vastly inferior Vista is what I think you meant. I have Office 2003 running perfectly happily on Windows 7 BTW.

This depends on the version of Word and more importantly what extras were installed in the first place as languages are optional downloads/installs at the point of first install.
