Student loans

Question please.

For someone who started at University in 2011 (therefore paying the old/lower fees of £3,375 a year) I realise that they pay the same annual fees for the duration of their course.

What happens if they decide to stay on and do another year, to do a Masters? Same rate of fees or the new/higher ones?

Haven't Masters degree fees always been set separately anyway? Don't think they're affected by the new undergraduate rules, though I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

I was told by my University (Winchester) that we would be charged the same fees as when we started, however this may have been slightly bended truth just to try and get people interested as they only recently started the masters programme in the the course I was doing.

I think Postgraduate degrees are a different kettle of fish. I am not sure that the Student Loans Company offer loans for postgraduate education. I don't remember them doing so in 2001, but that was over a decade ago.

i dont know about now, but i started uni in 2005 even before the top up fees came into force, had to leave for financial reasons in 2007 and rejoined in my 2nd year in 2009, and i still continued with the pre-top up fee rates.
Guessing it would be the same now.

It would be the same fees yes, but a masters is a seperate degree.

Sorry to crash in, but you've made me think. I went to uni in 1990, got a couple of loans to cover beer expenses (they were more like hardship loans back then, a few hundred quid) and I thought having to pay it back was a bloody liberty. I do have a lot of time for students nowadays, saddled with thousands, and the monthly payments, for years and years.

I'm new to this student loans malarkey but if a student wants to study in, say, southern Ireland or holland, can they still get a student loan on the basis that they are UK nationals or does the uni have to be in the UK?

My course is'nt a full Masters but it has the option of taking the full master's option. we would still pay the £3,375 as we started the course in 2011. however if (like some people on the course) want to do a PGCE we would have to pay £9,000+ as we would need to re-apply for university in full to do this.
