I always remeber we would look out for him at the Findon roundabout on the the way to and from me Gran and Nans, once spotted we would all wave enthusiastically.

Great stuff, he always looked so well kept and dapper. I imagine now he would be inside the Big Brother house starring at everyone with millions watching on.

I love the fact people had names for him, The Duke, was always the man with a bike who waved, to us.

Seen him, not seen him tapping his shoes, he always looks like he is counting or mumbling some rant under his breath.

Anyone remember a blind guy who I always saw in Shoreham between South down Road and the station. He would always have a bag of newspapers and when people approached would stop walking then pretend to look at his watch. Whilst doing this he would always raise one leg too. He always seemed to me to be bothered about people knowing he was blind. Hence newspapers, watch etc. Most strange. This was around the late 80s early 90s if memory serves.

Unpalatable though the thought is, we are all a couple of bad decisions away from that (look at that award winning newscaster who was living on the streets in Brighton). Count your blessings.

Good Ole' Horace Duke

A true worthingite thru and thru - my friends and I are in the process of igniting the character of Horace. We are in talks with WBC regarding the erection of a monument to the jolly old chap and the local press regarding a campaign.

As a child we taunted him - and looking back now you feel shame that we live in a world where someone gets ridiculed for being different. He would probably be iconic now and celebrated. (or sectioned)

During our research of Horace Duke we have come across many forums full of great memories from different generations. From late 1960 to the early 90s. There is very little on offer by way of facts, and we have very little photographic back up, so if anyone you know...grans, grandpas, aunties, uncles -
anyone who has any solid links to relatives, photos and stories. We welcome any response. (website to follow)

Our 'group' is still based in worthing and we are all very excited about rejeuvinating the spirit of Horace by way of a statue/art. We are going to hold a competition for someone to design something that best captures Horace's character. Who knows - there may not be just one winner as there are many locations we all fondly remember him from.
Join us in honouring Horace and reviving the spirit that the great southcoast used to have.

In the late 70's - early 80's there was also someone like that at the Brighton roundabout by the Palace Pier/Royal Albion...wonder if it was the same person?

Dad used to call him the Penguin (as in the Burgess Meredith version)

Horace used fo do "away days" from time to time. I know he used to go to Shoreham and Arundel at various times so I would think that he would have gone to Brighton a few times at least.

Without reading the whole thread is this the guy who dressed up like a clown and waved at traffic?

The dull part of the south coast
Without checking every post for duplication, I believe this gentleman's name is Horace Duke, an absolute character, immaculately turned out and the best amateur traffic policeman ever!

Remember seeing him when I was a kid, usually if I was in my parents car around Worthing, Shoreham and even in Bramber.

My mum always said " there is Burlington Bertie " I see a few others on this thread knew him by that name.

Horace was an ex stoker in the Royal Navy and as camp as a row of tents.
My Missus used to shop for him when they both worked at Marylebone Optical company, and was a good friend, so much so ,he even came to our wedding, unfortunately, not in straw boater etc

Does anyone remember the old boy, Irish, I think, who would bang on the road signs, and sing, outside the old Lloyds bank by the Guildbourne centre in Worthing
