For me..

Today I've just had to work out how many centimetres there are to a metre and only did so by assumption of the Latin in 'centimetre'. I realised that I didn't actually know the answer. I always use Imperial.

I only found out recently that the little "1, 2, 3, 4 and 5" numerals or numbers on toasters aren't actually 'degrees of toastage' but they're the amount of minutes they toast for!

However, I see the idea.
For me, literally only yesterday did it dawn on me that Match Of The Day is a play on “catch of the day”.
I think.

But wouldn't that be, de facto, the degree of toastage ?

And that The Motors 'Forget about you' is rip off of the theme tune. I only realised when it was pointed out to me.

It would then depend on how many filaments the toaster had, and how powerful they were. A commercial toaster would kick out a lot faster than a standard cheap household one I'd expect.

Can't believe I just typed that. Damn you for pressing my pedantry button. :lolol:

Yeah, the number on a toaster is not the minutes. I toast mine on 10 and it toasts for about 3 minutes. There is no uniform system, you just have to get used to whichever brand you’ve bought.

No it's not. It's ITV's The Big Match. I think. Or maybe Grandstand.

Of course, I have also learnt that, despite realising things you never knew, there is an age where you get confused and forgetful....

We pronounce homophones differently depending on whether it's a verb or a noun.

I only recently clocked that we do this with a multitude of words but it never really registered with me.

Some examples:

Project
Permit
Conduct
Suspect
Increase
Progress
Contract

In fact there are so many of these, my mind was blown.

Let me **** you up with- Fork candles-Fork handles.....:lolol:

But can't homophonic words be spelt differently. ? Two/too

Oh yeah! That’s genuinely fascinating. Cheers for that.
