Severe weather warnings - Brighton Hove City Council

Severe weather warnings
Thursday 15 and Friday 16 December

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning which affects Brighton & Hove.

On Thursday 15 and Friday 16 December high winds are expected across the county. The council is working to keep people and property safe and keep the city’s transport system moving during any severe weather.

The seafront is expected to be worse affected and it is recommended to avoid it where possible during Thursday and Friday. Due to a high tide and strong winds, warnings of flood and wind damage have been issued to seafront businesses and we are helping them to prepare where possible.

We are asking for people with beach huts and boats on the seafront to please check and secure them before and after any heavy winds.

All residents are advised to secure outdoor objects which could move such as bins and recycling boxes, plant pots and garden furniture.

Weather updates and more information

Our weather widget gives you the latest forecast for Brighton & Hove, alternatively further details can be found on the Met Office website.

We also have more information on our severe cold weather page which shows you our preparations for snow and ice, as well as what you can do to help yourself and others during severe cold weather.

As I understand it there is some doubt about where this deep low is going to hit England.....we might just end up with a gale and rain.....a wait and see job

I dont believe a word about any upcoming weather these days until Papa L has given his opinion - seeing as I live on the posh side of the Downs no doubt we will be spared much of this predicted Mayhem....

This is what the met office are saying:

Wintry and unsettled weather into the weekend - Met Office

Basically the track of this storm is STILL not guaranteed, I don't think until tomorrow evening will we know for sure whether the track of it is right, or whether it jogs north or south.

If it jogs north (100 miles or so) then expect STRONG to SEVERE gales overnight Thurs into Friday, accompanied by heavy rain.

if it jogs south, then still expect some winds but nowhere near as strong, however there would be an increased risk of seeing SNOW Friday morning. It won't settle (except possibly on the downs) but the snow could cause some chaos on the roads. However it is only a risk at this stage.

So some exciting weather either way in the next few days!

Well, reading this potential weather warning I am slightly apprehensive that I have chosen this weekend to travel from Notts to the great Brighton. Still lots of positives, see all the family and hopefully get to see the mighty Albion win at home to Burnley............SEAGULLS!!!!!

As has been mentioned, the exact track of this feature and how quickly it develops will make all the difference between a windy and wet night and a proper hoolie. The prospect of some transitory snow as the system moves off East is there, but it's be at temps a couple of degrees above freezing, onto wet ground, so don't expect a covering tomorrow. You might see a flake or 2 I suppose.

Also, I guess there might be a setup which produces more snow here, but it's unlikely, and it will always rain first as the low brings Southerly winds to start with.

It's weather like this that made my former English Master (VGSB) go and stand at the end of the Banjo Groyne and recite the 'Cry God for Harry, England, and Saint George!' speech of Shakespeare's Henry V, Act III at the sea.
