this is strange, I can see the lightning (bolt going across the sky) and it must be right over lancing/worthing no more than 5miles max away. yet I dont hear the thunder for 15secs...does this mean the actual noise is directed from the point of contact of the bolt at one end?

Sound travels at 330m/s, 15 seconds = 5km = 3.5 miles - Lancing to Shoreham (ish).

SORTED.

When I was at school we were told to calculate the distance by counting in between the flash and the thunder. 1 1000 , 2 100 , 3 1000 , 4 1000 , 5 1000 would equate to 5 seconds so the storm would be 5 miles away , so no need to panic until the time in between is less than you can say 1........ which probably means a brown trouser job.

Less than one = Less than 300metres, which is more than brown trousers!

Why was 2 only 100, while the rest were 1000? :dunce:

It's been quite impressive around Lancing, One lot coming from the north and another lot coming from the south! My poor dog is behind the sofa shaking like a leaf.
