Stop Cycling up Ditchling Beacon!!!!

What compromise is being suggested ? As a car driver and a cyclist I think both should have the right to use the hill with full awareness of the other and using cautious speed as on other roads, perhaps some more warning signs for cyclists and a reduction in speed whether it be cyclists/cars going up/down, any other suggestions ?

Oh now come on!!! It's a 'road' not a 'cycle path'
Therefore cars take priority and you lot are making it harder, slower and more dangerous for us. If you love your bike so much have some consideration and set your alarm for 5am when it's nice and light and do your exercise then. After 8am leave it to the cars.
One day one of you will get run over and it will all be the fault of the 'reckless driver' doing 20mph up a Jill but ran in to you on a blind corner.


It's not safe and it's also bloody annoying. I'm going to campaign to stop it and I'll win.

The OP should remember that bicycles were using roads long before cars were invented, so to try to say that bikes shouldn't be on the roads because they're for cars shows a lack of understanding of the subject that has been demonstrated many times in this thread.

Undertaking is an interesting thing. We are actually encouraged to do it at most road junctions, the advanced stop zones nearly always have a bit of cycle lane leading up to them on the left hand side. The very fact the advanced stop zones are there also encourages cyclists to undertake stationary traffic, personally I overtake wherever possible, the real problem comes when the lights turn green before you reach the advanced stop zone. What should you do then? A cyclist is still moving faster than the cars that are pulling away, but obviously you do not want to undertake any more vehicles as it is not safe. I tend to get past the car I'm riding by, then put myself in to the stream of traffic, for me this is slower but safer. However, once up to speed I am slowing the traffic down as I am not riding in the gutter like many drivers and cyclists think I should be. Unfortunately, it is a bit of a catch 22 this one, I see why many undertake and ride in the gutter, they see this bit of the road as their domain.

You don't pay tax to USE the roads. You pay tax because you DAMAGE the roads, by wearing them out. 44 ton lorries pay £1,850 a year vehicle excise duty because they do the most damage. Cyclists pay nothing, because they cause no damage.

So why do the Highways Agency not pay me for the damage their badly kept roads cause to my car?

There is this paragraph in the highway code: stay in your lane if traffic is moving slowly in queues. If the queue on your right is moving more slowly than you are, you may pass on the left.

At all road junctions where there is a queue of traffic a cyclist, or a motorbike for that matter, will be travelling faster than the stationary cars. Therefore, it is ok to undertake in this situation if you presume that the gutter, in which most cyclists are expected to ride in, is a seperate "lane". However, I do not tend to do this as I said in the previous post. What you cannot deny is that the advanced stopping zones at all junctions do have a longer bit on the left implying that cyclists should be here. This is what they look like if you cannot remember:

That's done by the Highways Agency so that instead of knocking cyclists off sideways, you can squash up to 10 at a time when they are in front of you.
For those of you who like to race cyclists up to the Beacon in your cars, there will be an outstanding opportunity on September the 16th when the Athletes taking part in the Virgin Active Triathlon will be racing up it and surrounding roads.

Surely this should be banned, it's potentially lethal. Pretty much every weekend cars are backed up and forced in to dangerous overtakes. Fair enough for the London to Brighton but I'm seriously thinking about campaigning to stop it happening all year round. Only s matter of time before someone gets badly hurt!

Try a different route or just cope and crawl.

Nothing should be lethal st that speed.
