Stockport job untenable - Gannon

Stockport boss Jim Gannon has said his position at Edgeley Park has become "untenable" before holding talks over the vacant manager's job at Brighton.

Brighton were granted permission to speak to Gannon after Micky Adams left the Seagulls on Saturday.

"I don't think any other manager would've put up with what's gone on in the last six months," Gannon told BBC Radio Manchester.

"My position became untenable a long time ago."

Gannon, 40, took over as Stockport boss in January 2006.

He led the club to promotion through the League Two play-offs last season, beating Rochdale 3-2 at Wembley.

But the Irishman said that recent negotiations over a new contract have led him to become increasingly frustrated.

"You only have to look at what was revealed over the last six or seven weeks to understand my position," said Gannon.

"Even now I don't think people understand the pressures that have been put on me to make decisions for myself, for my players and for the club."

And Gannon, who made over 400 appearances as a player for Stockport, said he was flattered to have been approached by Brighton.

"They obviously respect what I've done at Stockport County and I've had dealings with Brighton chairman Dick Knight over the Jim McNulty transfer," he said.

"Knight obviously respects me as a person, as a professional. He's a very good football man and I think out of due courtesy it's only right and proper to speak to them.

"They've done everything right and proper which isn't always the case with other clubs."

However, Stockport chairman Martin Reid, who gave Gannon the green light to talk to Brighton, said he was hopeful that his manager would stay in the north west.

Reid told the club website: "Jim has been such a success since taking charge of the team in 2006 that interest from other clubs is inevitable.

"Brighton chairman Dick Knight called me over the weekend and asked for permission to speak to Jim which, to be fair to Jim, has been granted.

"However, Jim remains crucial to our immediate survival plan and also to County's long-term ambitions.

"We certainly don't want to lose one of the best young managers in the country and sincerely hope his future remains here with us at Edgeley Park."
