I agree. But plenty if people do, and they aren't breaking any laws doing it, so who are you to tell them otherwise?

To be honest I'm not so much concerned about the legality but more the mindset of these people who think " I can have one drink as I will be under the limit" that are putting other road users at risk whilst driving under the influence of alcohol.

Campaign for a change in the law then. Because at the moment millions of people do it. Personally, I think the fact that you can have two pints if Carling and still possibly be under the limit is ridiculous. That much alcohol clearly affects your reactions. But if anyone is going to have one beer and drive, then I'd rather they had a pint of Carling than a pint of Stella.

sadly this is true.

unfortunatly the ratio of these pubs is low to those serving random fizzy amber liquid, which proves his point. and the prices they charge are ridiculous small breweries get a substanital reduced duty, the new pubs that sell them do their best to make non-mainstream lager look like elitist and pretentious (looking at the Craft Beer Co esp). i recal when the likes of Budvar Staropramen and Kirin where cheaper than Stella and other "premium" brands.

His point was that pubs need to sell cooking lager to survive. They don't, so my point is proven.

And I really don't get your elitist argument either. The example you use, Craft Beer Co, stocks a range of 8 real ales which start from about £3. Their lager is average priced and normally from a Leeds brewery and The Camden Town Brewery; nothing elitist or pretentious about these two unless I am missing something. I appreciate they sell expensive stuff as well but there is something for every pocket; is Tesco elitist because they sell champagne and Tesco Finest products? Craft Beer Co prefers to sell decent products....this is all.

My local does Bitburger and Pilsner Urquell. You don't need to serve shite Lager. It's the kids who fall for the marketing.

After 12 years in Scotland, I've finally developed a taste for Tennents (the cooking lager of choice around these parts). Not sure if it's just a case of my taste buds being beaten (battered?) into submission, but I reckon it's got much more about it than any of the three you mention. I don't suppose there's much chance of getting it on the cheap for a pub in the south though - in fact I'm not even sure I've ever seen it on draught outside Scotland.

FWIW, my stand-out least favourite lager is Budweiser (as distinct from Budvar, which is great). I can't think of any drink, beer or otherwise, that's so completely lacking in flavour and character.

What is a cooking lager?

A cooking wine is a low grade wine really only good enough to use in cooking.

Hence a 'cooking lager' is a low quality one, generally taken to mean the weaker common ones.

Landlord is considering an offer from a pub co to carry a discounted line which could retail at a lower price.

...which means that sales aren't good enough for him to pay his rent. And all that will happen will be that all his customers will (eventually) all switch to the cheaper lager so he'll be selling the same umber of pits at a lower price. Tell him to stay well away from this: it does't work
