Very sad. I’ve done a few jobs for his parents in Worthing over the years - his mum passed a while back but his dad’s still going I believe.
Last time I was there his mum proudly showed me a montage of photos of his career. Lovely people

Shocked and saddened by his sudden demise, I used to love the Ask Elvis section on his show, RIP Steve.

A bit like when there was only 4 or 5 TV stations. Everybody listened to Radio 1 and Steve Wright in the afternoon at the time.

Not my style of DJ but he was very well loved and totally committed to his work.

Sara Cox playing his favourite music on Radio 2 at the moment. It is very poignant istening. She sounds understandbly very emotional and says it has been a shock for everyone at radio 2.
RIP Steve

A real loss, a genuinely great broadcasting talent and by all accounts a very nice guy. He’ll be much missed.

Very sad news.

He was responsible for giving Ian Broudie (Lightening Seeds) his big break by playing Pure, the first DJ to do so. SW stopped playing it halfway through, which left IB mortified, and enquired who Lightening Seeds were as he’d never heard of them. He then announced that he loved the song and proceeded to play it again all the way through. And then played it all the way through again. This was unusual and caused a number of listeners to ring in asking about the song and the band and Lightening Seeds star was born.

RIP Steve

He WAS the embodiment of Radio 1 in the 1980s, when Britain was more cheesy, more wacky and a lot less cool.

What a great broadcaster, he brought a lot of joy to millions of people. This is a real shocker.
