I thought he was a great broadcaster - I still recall Mr Angry, Sid and miscellaneous other characters. I get he appeared a bit odd but I thought his shows were good value. Was listening to Pick of the Pops this morning on BBC Sounds whilst walking the dog - RIP Steve

I still remember - and often quote - some of his afternoon sketches.

RIP
Ah man. I remember him from my student days. Ditto re quotes. I often get the '.....and then it expodes into a sonic catherdral of sound' quote from my wife if I am explaining a band or song enthusiastically. We also use 'Steve, the milk is in the fridge' when something is obvious.

For those who dont know the first is his Pretentious Music Critic character, the second is The Down the Pan Daleks....post Doctor Who unemployed daleks who tried their hand at all sorts of jobs including tabloid newspaper medium/clairvoyancy in this case.

I also remember Viz's Student Grant's clock radio used to wake him up to 'Welcome to Steve Wright in the Afternoon'

RIP

WOW - that's a shock. Many a time on the motorway driving back from a work job in the afternoon listening to his show. RIP Mr Wright - 69 is no age at all.

RIP Steve Wright. He was THE afternoon for 3 decades. It’s incredibly sad. Almost everyday someone’s passing reminds me mine will be over soon enough. It’s actually a very sobering thought. And I’ve not nearly achieved anything like what Steve Wright has! But for there to be winners, there must be losers so I’ve always thought I provide a valuable service in this sense! Life is so precious. And over in a flash. Peace and Love everyone (with Queensbury Rules re:NSC)

Everyone was feeling sorry for Mary Decker after she clashed with Zola Budd on the track at the Olympics. On his next show, Steve Wright played the sound of Mary Decker wailing loudly."This will cheer you up Mary" He then played "It's a long way to trip a Mary " 🤣😅

That really is very sad news.
Worked in the joiners shop in the 80s/90s and the radio kept us going as youngsters and always looked forward to his afternoon show with his characters.
