Can't help but think we've missed a trick here, would be an excellent signing. A proper player, seems like a good character and his celebration is worth the admission fee alone. £27m in today's market seems like excellent value.

Ajax are selling all their best players !!! Surely gonna be rubbish next season. Bergwijn is not the answer for them.

At this point I reckon we've got a better squad than Ajax especially if Anthony goes.

Ajax are always selling their best players. That their model. They've made a transfer profit of £400m in the last six or seven years. Doesn't mean they turn into shit, they just find a couple of new fantastic talents.

Feels a bit different this time especially as they don't have a DOF and a new unproven manager. With English teams fishing in the same south American pool (like us!) And nothing really coming through from Ajax youth.

Feel the rebuild may take a while.

As long as Van der Sar is running the club I think they will be just fine. Probably not as strong as in recent years, but still fine, and if they do a couple of signings like this one they're more likely than not to walk home the Eredivisie. Jong Ajax did not have their best season but still plenty of talent there... in a year Kenneth Taylor will be as valuable as Gravenberch. Devyne Rensch is arguably already as good as Mazroui. Not their best youth generation but will be fine... as always. Even for the 15 years or so of chaos, they kept producing players.

Agree. By all means sell a few, but this feels more like when they broke up the late 90's team, selling Kluivert, Overmars, Davids, Seedorf, Van Der Sar and a few others within a short period. Almost certain that they will have a lull under those circumstances, because even if they can find the same number of youngsters of similar quality, they are bringing in a lot of very inexperienced players. They will likely still be competitive domestically, but not in Europe

I think you’ve made the perfect case for them signing Bergwijn.
I’m in Amsterdam at the moment and my friends here are confident that they have a model for continued success. They don’t expect to win the Champions League but believe they will be competitive. Their main focus is domestic and their contribution to the national team.

Disagree that the situation is anywhere similar.

In the 90s, Ajax thought they were building a dynasty. They were one of the richest clubs in the world and thought they would keep their dream team for a very long time, similar to how they did in the 70s. They were not prepared for the Bosman ruling or the sudden influx of money elsewhere making it a lot more desirable to move from the club. They struggled long and hard to adapt and made some crazy business decisions like buying and investing in a South African club, without getting anything out of it.

This turbulence went on for a long time and since they're Dutch, everyone and their mother had a loudly outspoken idea about the direction they wanted the club to go in. The Gaalians wanted it one way, Cruyffians in another but neither side was strong enough to get a grip of the club.

Eventually things turned TOO shitty and there was a final battle between the Gaalians led by former chairman Uri Colonel and between Johan Crujff himself who had finally decided to get involved personally. Both wanted to completely rebuild the club, but in differnet ways. Obviously when Cruijff got involved, there could be only one winner and since then they've been excellent again most of the time. I think they have the tools and the understanding to deal with any difficulties. It might take a year or two to reach recent heights but I don't think a player like Bergwijn, who is not really a superstar, would mind being part of that project.

Going by his PL goal ratio you would see the celebration about four times a season, that’s about £1.6m per celebration over a four year deal. The OP should stick to Corrie and arse licking the royals.

His goal ratio is 184 minutes per goal so just going by that, you'd see him celebrate somewhere around 30 times if he played all minutes.
