Burnley looked great today, anyone other than Stephens in the middle of the park and they'd have won convincingly.

Sounds about right.

Sickening to see Albion fans slagging him off imo. Hang your heads in shame.

In the same way Shane Duffy has struggled to pick up the pace of games, people need to remember that Dale has barely played any football in the past 12 months.

Least surprising post of the day.

It was always bizarre how many fans on here thought he was good enough the last couple of years. We should have moved him on at the end of 2017/2018.

Admirable but misplaced loyalty from club and fans.

100% correct.

A good servant for us, but never a top PL player.

I recall being slated by some here for suggesting he wasn’t good enough.

Not convinced about this. Thought he played in 20-30 games for us last season, but happy to be proved wrong on this.

Yet successive Brighton managers and apparently Dyche rated him enough to play him....

Think I know whose judgement I’d go with.

Stephens, AK and Murray were our 3 most important players in the championship season and that shouldn’t be forgotten. By that I mean, take one of them out and I’m not sure we would have finished second. Think he did well in his first season in the PL and contributed last. Agree he should have been moved on but don’t agree with this vitriol against him now as he’s served us so well (admittedly I’ve slagged off players in the past!).

Without Muzza’s goals 2016/17, wouldn’t we have finished mid table?

good player over many seasons. Didnt have ability to turn games but very rarl y let us down. 7/10 most games but hardly ever a 4/5 or 8/9

Spot on. 'Never gives the ball away!' one of our more hyperbolic tunes, but Stephens certainly a key part of our promotion to and survival in the Premier League. Hopefully Burnley move works out for him on a personal level albeit they are a team it is hard to have much affection for - apart from seeing our old boys do well.

On a separate note it will be interesting to see how Dyche gets on under potentially a new regime.

Expectations will certainly rise and there will be money to spend which he won’t be used to
