Brighton Prospectus
I've been churning through a Premier League Prospectus, putting all the metrics I find useful to understanding the game, teams, and players out on my website. I like posting the articles on team sites because fans who watch every game for years often have info I simply can't have as I only watch a few Brighton games. It can lead to some interesting clashes (Wolves fans are sure Joao Gomes is really good and Tommy Doyle isn't and I disagreed) but it's a great exercise.
Anyway, the broad takeaways for Brighton
-team level they played an incredibly unique and complex style that could be tough for certain players, so player evaluations could change a lot next year
-they played incredibly short, complex passing patterns in their own half that led to huge passing numbers for center backs, but overall their buildup and play from goalkeeper did not lead to good chances often. It was maybe too much, and they were also very at risk of giving away transition chances after losing the ball
-didn't get into transition enough themselves, were a good attacking team broadly once they finally got into settled possession.
-a very strong attacking left side was their weakness defensively, not rare just notable.
-player wise the team had a wide array of performances: key players like Enciso, Pedro, Mitoma, and Estupinan were injured a lot and some players clearly not up to the task of European competition had to sub in a lot: Buonanotte, Adingra for example. But some positions were just clearly not strong enough to start: midfield saw players like Moder, Baleba and Dahoud play a ton when they were some of the weakest performers. Veltman, Lamptey and co at right back also are not up to the standard
-Pascal Gross has long been one of my favorite players in the world, and his statistical profile was essentially elite across the board. Lots of praise for the guy I've been writing about for 8 years.
I think there is some more interesting stuff in there for every Brighton fan, I try to include glossaries and descriptions of all these stats, but I do fall into habit of sort of writing for myself and not explaining, just shoot a DM or post if you want explanation. Love to hear your thoughts
