Harry, if you are into books - I thoroughly recommend Get In … Starmer insight by 2 Times journalists. If you have the time or inclination, give it a read and give me a shout on here when you have, I would be interested in your opinions.
Cheers, mate. Not seen it.

Just spent 20 minutes looking at the prologue, and that, online. I can't tell if it will suggest that McSweeny is the man with the vision and that Starmer will do anything to have power, or that Starmer has a public service imperative that has risen above party political orthodoxy, and has a hitman to help him navigate the opponents.

The prologue notes the ruthless purge of the left. I recall at the time how Starmer did nothing actively to purge the left, but acted decisively each time one of the goons retweeted something antisemitic or idiotic (e.g., Wrong Bailey who was billed as a future leader at one point). I see the book is a collection of interviews, and of course everyone has an opinion. I may ask my (very left wing) brother to buy me a copy for my up-coming 67th, but he will probably refuse :lolol:

I hope we never need to see this but I disagree.
If Ukraine can hold out for 3 years then a combined Europe force would smash the Russian forces.
Yep... so we send our troops to die in a land nobody really gave a f*ck about before all this, for what exactly?

Many people also think that the Russian military consists of half a dozen WW2 tanks, five donkeys, a box of catapults and a bucket of sharp stones.

What they fail to realise is that they have some of the most advanced weaponry on planet earth, a truly colossal and well trained army, and a leader who is showing more restraint than he's being given credit for. He could have ended the Ukraine war in a few days and a few button pushes.

This war is, and always has been, a mineral and farming grab by the West. Lend them as much as possible to fight an unwinnable war, then when it all goes tits up you ask for the money back. Ooopsie... they can't pay it back. Well.. let's be having some of your resources.

And if you're still scratching your noggin about the above, ask yourself why they put a man in charge who used to prance around on TV dressed in lycra with fake titties on.

See the bigger picture people.

You have included some facts in order to construct a perverse narrative there.
And your efforts are ruined by the absurd Trumpist claim that Ukraine (and indeed the west) started it.

Events certainly create opportunities, but opportunities do not change the nature of the events, or their cause.

Presumably you think the second world war was caused by Poland failing to deal with the Jews?

Christ is that for real ?

That’s right out of the alt right’s conspiracy theory notepad.

Russia are borrowing kit and men from North Korea and Iran, their economy is just about to crash and the prisons are being emptied to supply the front line with untrained fodder.

Starmer has probably had the best week of his time as PM. He has very skillfully handled Trump, far better than even Macron, and is now the leading force in Europe between the US and Ukraine. There are various liberals criticising him for bending to Trump, but he hasn't done that - just enough to keep him onside. Without that skill, Europe would be on their own with Ukraine. No doubt about it.

And one thing that hasn't been talked about much is that Trump has signalled a trade deal is coming... something Boris et al got nowhere near with.

"Many people also think that the Russian military consists of half a dozen WW2 tanks, five donkeys, a box of catapults and a bucket of sharp stones???"

I very much doubt that.

Good job you weren't around in 1939: "So, Hitler's invaded Poland. Who cares?"

It's precisely because many of us can "see the bigger picture" that we know that Putin (and his cowardly stooge Trump) must be stood-up to. Quite apart from the absolute atrocity of a sovereign state being invaded by a megalomaniac narcissist and bully three years ago, there are the longer-term and wider implications - if Ukraine is defeated, which European country will Putin (backed by Trump) attack next.

Interesting, too, that the type of people who spent the 1980s warning us to defend the West from Moscow's expansionist ambitions and dictatorial leaders are now the same people who want Ukraine (and the rest of us) to appease Moscow, and wave the white flag of surrender.

Restraint? Putin has shown restraint? You've been taken in by his bots mate.

This war was always at the instigation of the west? That's some conspiracy you've uncovered

Zelensky will be going into that part of it with his eyes open, but what the UK won't do is extort a vulnerable ally

Did they put him in charge, or did he win a free and fair election?
