The Vader scene at the end of Rogue One is as good as any Star Wars scene I’ve ever seen.

You know what, after I posted it, I did think Rogue One, "I am the Force and the Force is with me", but thought better than quoting myself. The way that slides into ANH is brilliant.

Can Abrams possibly save the saga some dignity with this final outing?

Have any of the subsequent films or spin offs given us any of those jaw dropping moments, Leia clinging to Luke and swinging across a chasm, Han's yeeeeeehaaaa to give Luke the all clear to blow the death star, Vader telling Luke he's his father, Yoda raising the X-wing from the swamp, Han and Leia's stolen kisses. You think back to those moments, and you are struggling.

We're left with Luke seemingly a grumpy island redneck who dies from 'force projection exhaustion', a shiny 'chrome dome' storm trooper, a space chase that revolved around waiting for the chased to run out of fuel, and a big gun in a planet that seemed more complicated than building another Death Star and just as vulnerable.

What could possibly go wrong!?

I've enjoyed the spin offs. Rogue One is up there with the best of them and the blurring of the lines between good and bad was well done. The munging of original Star wars footage in the battle at the end and intertwining of the start of A new hope was great. Likewise, Solo survives repeat viewings and was a pretty good heist movie in its own right albeit the women's lib fembot could do one.

The new series is a complete mess though. The Force Awakens was a pretty good set up with a well done death of Han but the Last Jedi luzzed it all in the bin. The writing off of the parents storyline, Luke necking Jizz, The gambiing is bad kids, Glam admiral Purple rinse, that Super women moment and the misplaced 'I can't hear you' joke at the start are some of many dire cinematic moments in the film which rivals The Phantom menace as the worst in the series. In fact, There is another Phantom Menace comparison. Rose = Jar Jar Binks.

Low expectations going in. Which is no bad thing.

I actually thought Johnson got Luke about right. Luke has always been a bit of a dick. From his "I care" to Leia, to his arrogance in a room full of battle hardened pilots "I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home. They're not much bigger than two meters" yeah all right you cocky shit. He gets all teenage brat in ESB, giving Yoda no end of shit. He gets a bit wiser in ROTJ, but he still makes a pigs ear of the Han rescue, and then needs Vader to save him with his "father pleeeeeease". To top it off, he creates a new Vader by repeating the same mistake as Obi Wan before him. Idiot. Drinking Jizz juice - he had it coming. I thought Yoda coming to see him in his force form to have a bit of a laugh at his expense was perfect as it happened, same old Luke. That was the best bit of TLJ.

... The writing off of the parents storyline...

i was so pleased at that, it was massively over analysed part of the previous film, so many theories completely ignoring the precedents that uber jedi come from nowhere. generally the new films have got the jedi stuff ok, its the filler to set up scenes they mess up.

I saw the latest trailer earlier today and will definitely go and see the full film as I have a love of Star Wars due to my age. This leads me to look doey-eyed at the original films and less favourable at everything that has come since.

Episodes 1-3 which came out 15-20 years ago were great with the action but were done all wrong...The 3 episode story arc should have been written differently.

I had high hopes when Disney took over the franchise as these guys are the masters at storytelling. These hopes were further enthused when I heard JJ Abrahams would be writing/directing with assistance from Lawrence Kasdan who was heavily involved in the original movies. But The Force Awakens was just a re-make of A New Hope, but with absolute nothing to address the time inbetween Episodes 6 & 7...I mean, how did the First Order come into being? Did a bunch of guys just find some Galactic Empire stormtrooper outfits and tie-fighters hanging around and decided to put them into use...And where did Supreme Leader Snoke come from? Also the whole Luke-Jedi School-Ben Solo/Kylo Ren aspect should have been explored and made the basis of any post Episode 6 film. That said I enjoyed the idea of Finn turning his back on being a stromtrooper and gaining a conscience.

The Last Jedi was just a mess. JJ Abrahams handed control over to someone else who completely re-wrote the script and made a worse film than The Force Awakens...Poe Dameron being responsible for losing the whole rebel bombing fleet just to take out one First Order ship was stupid. The entire trip to that "casino planet" find the hacker and as a by-product release all the enslaved animals was a total joke. And since when has spaceship fuel ever been a concept in the Star Wars universe? But again, it is not all negative as I liked the Rey & Kylo Ren link

So I cannot say I am overly optimistic at how Rise Of The Skywalker will turn out which is a shame. The potential is there with Disney though as Rogue One was excellent and I am intrigued as to how The Mandalorian turns out.

Anyway, I probably think about all this far too much.

Albion, England & Star Wars forever.

Don’t disagree with any of that. We’ve a lifetime of love invested in this story if your a kid of the 70s so it’s fine to criticise the last two especially TLJ which was crap. I hope the RoS is a much better film, as I see it, it will either be an epic go down fighting finale (it’s already lost from a best of 3 perspective but can restore some honour) or a case of ‘thank god it’s finally been put out of its misery’ if it’s another dud (and we can just go back to the originals and pretend the rest never happened). It just goes to show how hard it is to make multiple films in a franchise that are any good. Sure they all make money, but that’s no barometer given fan loyalty. Maybe it’s just a case of too much of a good thing. A bit like Jackson post LoTR. He should have just made one film called The Hobbit but instead created a monstrous, bloated turkey out of a much loved children’s classic despite everyone willing him to succeed. It must have been the first film in history that took longer to watch that it did to read the book. As for Amazon’s forthcoming TV series...old JRR will be rolling in his grave. It’s sacrilege. A disaster in the making. The ideas department are bankrupt even if the commercial team are far from!!

We need a twist. Rey is the Emperor incarnate, which explains her Force strength, and her fight with Kylo Ren at the end is actually flipped and he's trying to save the day. The grandson of Anakin Skywalker is the ultimate hero, finds redemption and hence the line of Skywalker is risen once more.

You heard it here first.

It's not so much the parent storyline - I can't say I care who blew his beans to create her - it's more the amount of bread crumbs that were thrown down in TFA and then cheerily cast aside in the next film.

Parents? No-one. Forget it. Why has 3P0 got a red arm? Ignore it, shiny now. How come the light sabre was calling? Lash it in the sea. Whose this Snook character? Not to worry, he's dead now. The lack of continuity was a joke like they made it up as they went along....

point is the breadcrumbs may not be there, they are created by the fans (over)analysis. sometime the writer/director have ideas that dont make it through, so they get forgotten, ignored or written out. or indeed written in, Lucas created several shed loads of history that simply isnt there in the original film. i just let it wash over.

I have been a proponent of the Rey Palpatine for a while. There are hints and suggestions in TFA which point towards this. Her fighting style in the forest at the end of the film is very similar to the Emperors, and unlike any Jedi.

Sadly, I agree with what you are saying. I did, and still do like The Force Awakens, but I find The Last Jedi a hard watch, despite some very good bits.

Re the Amazon LoTR series, I disagree though. There is sooooooooooo much back-story and other material to explore, a series format will be a good way to show it, and given the budget per episode I have high hopes. As I do for The Mandalorian.

I agree. With what I've seen online on SW websites, it looks very much like Ben redeems himself and restores the balance of the force. However, it appears that Rey is also still a "goodie" - and doesn't turn to the dark side. Pure speculation though, and will have to wait and see.

Re: discussion about TLJ - I saw it on the Disney Cruise when it opened (amid a lot of whooping & hollering from the American audience) & bizarrely was sat near Warwick Davis and his family who were on the same cruise. I wasn't overly impressed with it if Im honest...and he didn't look too enamored with it either. In fact, & if I remember right, Im sure he left before the end!

hmmmm, I think she may be a clone of Anakin myself, what with being a natural pilot (like Anakin) and the handwaving away of her parents in TFA but accept I may be incorrect :) Also, reading other posts - I have long voiced the opinion that TLJ is the worst of the Star Wars films simply because it doesn't really feel much lime a SW film at any point to me, more like on of the DC attempts to ruin their comic heritage. Complete trashing of any interesting new characters or leads as well of disposing of at least one icon of the series practically off-screen. And don't get me started with those ham-fisted attempts at humour. Still going to see the triple bill though as will be too lazy to leave the cinema in between TFA and ROS :)

So anyway, was that Yavin 4 in the trailer?

i often think of Attack of the Clones as the worst, because its just a vehicle to get from Phantom to Revenge of Sith. Last Jedi suffers this same problem, though its good if we can look past the OJ chase in space and detour to Monaco, neither of which are necessary. First Order could simply find the location of the rebels on Crait, a la Hoth, perhaps they couldn't bring themselves to copy that much? could cut half hour from the film without anyone noticing.

on pilot skills, all Jedi have exceptional piloting skills due to ability to foresee future. Anakin is just more maverick with it.

Someone at work just pointing this out on the trailer.

Horses in Space?

More warning flags.

I don't think the horses are in space. Yes, they appear to be running along the superstructure of an Imperial Star Destroyer, but that doesn't mean it's in space. After all, a previous shot showed one emerging from the ground / ice.

Conversely, Empire is probably the best film of them all because rather than being a link to a destination, the film is really only concerned with the journey. It doesn't shy away from being a bit bleak at times, but invests a huge amount in the development of the characters. I can't really think of a moment in Empire Strikes Back that isn't essential to the film.

It is inexplicable to think that Irvin Kershner followed up his directing genius of ESB with Never Say Never Again.:shrug:
