Standard of division a decade on...

What do you think - after the rise and fall of the fortunes of clubs in the past decade or so, do you think the standard of the division in 91 when we got to playoff final was better or worse than it is now?

better, the likes of rebrov are in the league now you wouldnt have thjis sort of player playing at this standard 10 years ago

I'd probably agree - watched the albion back then but as i was only nine and didn't even know what good football was. Although i'm pretty sure John Byrne was pretty damn good...

Much better now. Loads more foreign players and also good English lads forced out of the premiership by better foreigners. In 1991 we only had to worry about playing against a few ex 1st div stars (and on Oldham's terrible plastic pitch).

We were a totally shit side with two good forwards. I think we got to the play-offs with a negative goal difference. Can't see a team repeating that in the current league.

We sold our two forwards and got relegated the next season didn't we?

Yep, just looked it up - we finished with a goal difference of -6 compared to the others who had about +19. No wonder we didn't beat county with Johnny Byrne injured...

I think the standard of the division is better than in '92, although I suspect a few ex-West Standers probably still think we're shit.
