Was left a huge stamp collection from when my Dad died, it was left to him by my Grandad. There are 10s of thousands of stamps, some very valuable, some 2 a penny. Thing is I really don't have the first clue about how best to sell them on. They are mostly all Polish, so not the easiest to find out info on, does anyone have any clues? Or is it worth taking it to an auction house and see what they say? Any help would br very greatfully received

Theres a shop just up from the club shop (towards the Station) that buys and sells stamps. probably a good idea to have a word in there.

Make sure they do not try buying them though as they will under value them. Worth taking them to a specialist though. Sure you can find one on the net somewhere.

you can try someone like this matey

dealer

Go to your local library or go online and browse through the Stanlety Gibbons book. It is the bible for stamps.

Might take you a while, but could be worth it.

I only know about the bible because my late Grandfaher collected stamps.

Did have a look, but most of mine are Polish stamps, is not the easiest to find the books, have seen a couple of websites, as you say will take some time, there so many variations.

Might sound like a bit of a shot in the dark, but if you have any connections in Poland it might be worth seeing if there are any collectors there who might either be interested or give you an idea of the true value. I am guessing here, but it sounds like you may be sitting on a history of Polish stamps.

It is a big history, I know how bad this sounds, but the value of them there apparently isn't as high, as there isn't the spare money. Have made a couple of phone calls to relatives, but without knowing what I have is bit difficult to describe over the phone. Think there is a Sothebies in Chichester, so might see if I can make an appointment there, or at least try to speak to them and get some advice. My Dad went through a couple of albums with me, and the difference between 2 stamps that to me look exactly the same was about £200, and that was 5 years ago.

Sothebys sounds like a good place to start, they should at least give you a fair idea of their value and will most likely have someone who is an expert in that field. An auctioneer will certainly look to maximise their commission by getting a good price for them, should you choose to sell, whereas a shop or collector would be looking merely at getting them for as little as possible.

Unfortunately I don't, they are all in albums, in cupboards in the loft. Know there is one album with the cream of the collection in, the rest are just to numerous to mention. Think there are about 20 albums, and bags and boxes of loose stamps

Thats what I was thinking, will be selling them as they don't have a sentimental attachment to me, and they are taking up an awful lot of room, I have other things that I'm keeping but need to have a big clear out.
