I was watching ‘the world at war’ documentary over the weekend (the best documentary ever in my opinion) and the Italians have a sad history of cowardice. It must be in their dna.

Now you've enjoyed finding out about World War II, may I recommend looking into World War I as well! And once you've discovered that the Italians fought alongside the British in a long and protracted conflict on the Italian front, you may want to go back into history further and read about the couple of millennia of Italian history as well.

Always worth remembering that World War II isn't the summation of all history, and a 1973 documentary isn't the font of all knowledge.

I hadn't appreciated it was something unique to the Roman clubs. If so, next time it happens they should be thrown out of European competition for 5 years. Throwing stuff at people in the stadium is one thing, but you can't let this sort of disgusting violence continue to go unnoticed. It's shameful.

Frustrating as it is, that is probably completely unworkable in reality, isn't it?

If you issued an edict mandating that 'next time an away fan in Rome for a Roma match gets stabbed, Roma will get a ban' that will pretty much guarantee that incognito Lazio ultras will be out in force, stabbing everyone in sight (and vice versa).

If you just banned both clubs next time any away fan gets attacked, that really wouldn't seem fair on the 'innocent' club.

A bit of further investigation into Italian society at the time will tell you it was very divided, a lot of Italians were socialists , a lot of middle ground people were not interested in Mussolini's attempt to build an empire. So not surprising that many did not want to die for it. Italian fascists were tough fighters who died for what they believed in (no I am not glorifying them ).

Our most recent war with the Italians? It ended almost 80 years ago! Unless you're 95+ (and if so, then more fool me for arguing online with someone that age) you played zero part in it. By your logic, we should think of the Turkish as angry revolutionists for winning the Turkish War of Independence against the Brits over 100 years ago? or Iceland as being a powerful nautical enemy for winning all three of the "Cod Wars"?

I think mocking me for suggesting that you should do some wider reading when you're casting aspersions on the current state of a country based on a 50 year old documentary is very funny btw.

I would have thought that not backing the Nazis was a rather decent thing to do. Mussolini wasn't a universally liked figure in Italy and unlike Hitler, he was unable to hoodwink the majority of the population. Maybe their heart - quite rightly - wasn't in it?

I don't think we can start calling all Italians fascist cowards because of the idiots that attacked our Jack and Andy.

I have a strong suspicion that it's an Ultra initiation test.

We're talking about two clubs who regularly chuck fireworks at each other in the ground during Rome derbies.

The hotel we were staying at was being run by a Lazio Ultra. He was telling us that he once got banned for a year for luzzing stuff at Fiorentina fans inside the stadium. And his mate picked up a flare luzzed at them by Roma fans in the derby. Unfortunately it had a firework inside it, and it took his hand off.

Well @Hamilton's was given a Nobel Prize. Yours was stripped of an MBE for allegedly (according to the Sheldon report and the BBC) failing to monitor what was happening with Barry Bennell, or follow up on rumours of sexual abuse.

I'd say as far as heroes go they're quite different, and I wouldn't be so smug about yours.

It's a difficult one. If a Roma (or any away fan) was attached before a match in Brighton, NSC would be in uproar if the club were sanctioned for it unless there was clear evidence that there was a link to the club.

However, this happens so regularly, it should be possible for UEFA to say that Rome is too dangerous for away fans and therefore both Rome clubs have to pay European games in Milan. The alternative is that away fans are banned from the matches (home and away) but this also isn't fair.

It is obviously a football problem as I haven't heard of any rugby fans being stabbed during the 6 Nations, although I don't follow rugby so it's possible I have missed this.

There are no known buttock stabbings surrounding 6 nations games that I have seen reported...I know dozens who have been to Rome for games at both the smaller rugby stadium and when they moved to the Olympic Stadium.

Didn't Turkey declare war on Germany and therefore were on our side in the last war involving the two nations (albeit not until Feb 45).
