Hope not, as it would mean El-Abd and McLEOD in starting X1.
They don't really mean anything.

Clearly not, Murray 17, Virgo 23, El-Abd keeps the 6. Nothing can be read into them

El-Abd still having number 6 is a disgrace if you ask me. :nono:

But happily, they really don't mean a thing. Number 5 is a little bit cursed for us.

They don't mean anything, but they do give an impression. Any opposing clubs who happen to see El-Abd as #6 will assume he's quite an important player for us. Which is ever so slightly embarrasing. Give him 28 back. Though, he's been #6 for what, 4/5 years?!

England thought that in 1953 and 1954, when, playing Hungary, rather than mark the person nearest to them, they tried to mark a given number.

Needless to say, this crass naivety in tactical awareness (although it had always been the case hitherto) opened up holes in the England defence you could drive a lorry through. England lost the second of these two games 7-1, and remains our heaviest ever defeat.

Sorry, crap example, but that's what sprung to mind with what you said there.

That sprung into your mind? That's incredible, because I see absolutely no link there whatsoever.

On that subject however, any manager thinking it a wise idea to mark by numbers is surely destined for the sack. Though, maybe it explains what happened with Micky last season. Football by numbers.

The link being the relevance (or lack thereof) of the number worn on the back of a player's shirt.

When Argentina won the World Cup in 1978, who wore the No.1 shirt? Ossie Ardiles, that's who.
