But could a centre back be wearing 4, making 6 the more defensive CM? Didn't Ward play in 8, making the strikers 8 ad 9 and pushing 10 into midfield. Is there a definitive answer? And, should we care any more, given that for Veltman the obviously correct number is 34 because of what happened at Ajax (just as Root should always wear 66 in cricket)?

Back in the day when the players on the pitch were numbered 1 to 11, it was usually numbers 5 and 6 at CB, but not always. Playing alongside Brian Labone at CB for Everton was no,10, John Hurst, which always seemed a bit weird!

This announcement is very late in the day. The season has already long since started and the players have worn those numbers. What was the delay?

Not really. Karbownik who wore number 6 only left a few weeks ago , and Locadia - might have possibly left last week to Turkey whose transfer window only shut a few days ago etc - but in the end stayed.
The "25 man squad" was only confirmed by the Premier League last Friday.

Taking that a step further, in South America, the most creative midfielder of the side often wears number 5, that;s why Battipiedi, a Gus signing from Argentina, was given that squad number.

In non-league football in this country, the central defensive pairing is usually 4 or 5.

So yes indeed it can vary greatly.

Well, that was a waste of a perfectly good '5' !!

Come to think of it, I remember Liverpool having a midfielder wearing no.5 in the 70s or 80s - can't remember who it ws though.

Ray Kennedy perhaps? Even more of an anomaly wearing no.5, as he was a striker when at Arsenal!

Lee Sharpe wore number 5 for Man United, which was unusual. Samuel Eto'o wore number 5 for Everton. South Americans usually have the number 5 as the holding midfielder, which is why Augustin Battipiedi wore number 5 for us on the few occasions he did get to play. Then Lewis Dunk inherited the number and the rest is history.

On a side note I played golf with Brian Labone in a corporate celebrity golf day. Without doubt the nicest human being I ever met taking the time to even spend the whole evening with our fourball when he could have made his excuses and left.
