Is it just me or does it suddenly feel like we've got a giant squad? Seems like yesterday that we were struggling at the end of the season and depth looked like our biggest issue by a long margin.

We are absolutely loaded at the front and middle of the pitch, really need to get new defensive recruits in though.

41 players in total including U21s, majority of who will expect/want to see game time this season. There will be plenty of games this season though and we don't know the injury status of some of them, i.e. Moder, Lamptey, March, others are semi permanently injured as well i.e. Lallana, Webster (Lamptey).

yes. we will have injuries but a large number of those will be sold or loaned again as not in RDZ plans or (Connolly, Khadra, Karbownik, Sanchez), some will continue to develop with EPL or Euro Loans (Leonard, Rushworth, Turns, Offiah, Moran, Samuels , Scherpen ? ) and he'll look anew at (Moder, Lamptey, Alzate, Koslowski) with probably only Adingra definitely straight into the squad . And they need to make room for a few more incomings.
Size wise - its no different to previous seasons. We had c 20 loans last year at end of the window in 22/23. So far just Sima, Beadle are set up ...most loans are concluded deeper into the window.

I’m actually mega excited for Moder under De Zerbi. He was one of our best players under Potter. Great at finding space, decent defensively. Could slot into the Macalister role well.

We’ve got so many players where their strongest position is Centre Attacking Midfield - Buonoutte, Sarmiento, Alzate, Ayari, Moran - but it’s difficult to see how they fit well into De Zerbis system. Playing them out wide hasn’t really worked, De Zerbi wants those players to have high speed. The best role for them is the Macalister position but there’s so much competition for that spot and they don’t really have the defensive clout. Maybe the deeper second striker role is better for them?

Putting aside player flexibility for a moment (Gross, Milner, Buonanotte etc) and with the internet of having at least one back up/sub, is this everyone in the clubs best position?

I’ve excluded a few who will likely be loaned back out/sold

Looks about right. I personally think gross is best even further forward, but other than goaly he can literally slot in anywhere he's so versatile

Maybe. But injuries will always strike, being without Lallana, Sarmiento, Veltman, March, Webster on top of the long term injuries was hard, but could happen again

For me, the signings of Pedro, Milner, Dahoud and Verbruggen are essentially like for like swaps of the players we've lost over the last season - Trossard, Mac Allister, Mwepu and Sanchez. Still have to replace Colwill and probably Caicedo.

But with the likes of Adingra, Alzate and Kozlowski returning, plus Moder, we're in credit.

We have got a giant squad, 28 players that would be need to be named in the 25 man squad so we need a fair bit of movement out to make space for any other new players as well or there will be some disappointed players come the end of the transfer window.

We are likely to see Sanchez, Schrepen and one of McGill or Rushworth sold/loaned out. I can’t see players like Karbownik, Khedra (unfortunately), Connolly and Zeqiri (again unfortunately) featuring either which brings the squad down to 21 and gives us some scope to bring in more players without having to leave anyone out in the cold when the 25 man squad is eventually announced.

If we don’t sign another Left Back then I imagine Karbownik will stay as Estupinuan back up.

On that note we have the great wild card of De Zerbi, a man that when he came said he was most excited about working with a then very average Solly March. Who knows, from the many returning players, he might see something in one of them and turn them into a baller. Zeqiri for player of the season anyone?

Currently a huge squad, but there is a lot of outward movement to come.

Probably half of the U21s listed will go out on loan, particularly those who came through our junior ranks rather than being bought in from elsewhere - most of Moran, Leonard, Weir, Rushworth, Samuels, Peupion, Turns, Offiah, Hinshelwood, Ayari (?), Baker Boaitey...

Then there are the over 21s who we will likely try to sell but at least loan out again. Sanchez, Scherpen, Lamptey (?), Karbownik, Connolly, Zeqiri, Khadra.

That leaves a much more manageable squad with room for two or three new first teamers, and a couple more wonderkids.

Livramento
Milner

Centre Backs
Webster
Dunk

Dahoud
Koopmeiners

Attacking Midfield/No.10
Lallana
Buonanotte
Enciso
Sarmiento

Wingers

You don't think March is first choice RW and you think João Pedro has signed as a RW?

Primarily yea. March backup there is Buenotte but he’s proven he hasn’t got the pace to do damage there. From what I’ve seen De Zerbi likes his wingers to have pace and excellent dribbling skills, forwards he prefers to drop deep and link play. Pedro is a direct player has speed and great dribbling ability. Also, we already have Feeguson, Welbeck and Undav to cover Centre Forward position. There’s a lot of games and a lot of player flexibility so I’m sure we might see Pedro play CF too, but primarily I think he’s been signed as winger which is our high damage position in De Zerbis style

Yep, that's pretty much how I see it too. Really hope Rushworth and McGill are loaned rather than sold (may need a new contract for McGill if he's not going to leave for free after a loan though?) Not sure what's 'unfortunate' about Khadra and Zeqiri - both below our level now, shirley.
