If we don’t get at least a striker, RB and ideally a CM (and a winger based on Jose not returning any time soon) we’re a little bit fooked. I guess ‘evolution’ will be replacing what we’ve got/had with something better, so not expecting anything startling to happen.

'....and ideally a CM' - 'and ideally' my foot! - CM has got to be our number 1 priority, even before strikers and RBs. It is currently our weakest link; other parts of the team might suddenly start looking a lot better if midfoeld was controlling matches, driving the team forward - and maybe even turning up at high speed in the opposition penalty area occasionally (heresy though that seems to have been last season).

For all Hughton’s faults?
He had very few; have some ****ing respect for our best manger ever.

Secondly, there was a profound lack of Hughton ‘style’ players signed last season. He played the hand he was dealt, which with his football beliefs/systems, was pretty rotten.
Lastly, if Potter starts playing inside forwards, box-2-box midfielders and wing backs - we may already have the players to succeed.

Sorry disagree. For all Hughton's faults he had to work with a pretty rubbish squad. Our current team isn't very good and the table doesn't lie. Not saying it needs massive changes but it needs some quality players. Dipping down into the Championship just means another season of struggle i'm afraid.
Apart from about 6-7 players the rest are a damp squid.

I disagree, Hughton didn't have a rubbish squad at all. But he did have a squad built primarily for attacking football. He used them almost exclusively for defensive football.

They didn't get much chance to play in a way which suits their game, and got plenty of chances to play in a way which didn't suit their game.

It's hardly any wonder that they didn't shine.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing that change next season, with a manager who wants to play in a way which fits with the plethora of attacking talent we have.

I’m excited.

But we don’t have creative CM’ers with mobility/pace for 90 minutes, who can defend/press when we haven’t got the ball (60% of game time?). The centre of midfield is crying out for players of that ilk. I’m sure Potter and the ever growing team of recruiters and analysts will have some key transfers up their sleeves.

CH: But they are not what I need and are also sh*te
Management/Recruitment: Well it is take X or Y or leave it
CH: OK I will take X and see what I can do with him, but it may take half a season
January 2019 window Management/Recruitment say do you want to sign X or Y?
CH: Says no thanks I can't make a silk purse out of a pigs ear and while you're at it, can you send a couple of last years pigs ears out on loan and I will run the squad with two short for the rest of the season

You can only doubt ? None of us know how this recruitment policy actually works other than the manager has supposedly the last say
But answer me this what manager in his right mind runs a squad with two players less than the rest of his competitors, in the toughest league in the world

Yes, I doubt it. Seems very unlikely to me.

Of course there are some players above budget the club would never sign, but other than that it is much more likely it is a collaborative rather than confrontational process between the manager and the rest of the recruitment team - and the manager will have every opportunity to present his case for a player.

Does a manager even have time to go and watch a major target?

Just keep Winstanley away from lower standard leagues. German, Italian, French football seems to fit PL better IMO.....

PB is talking common sense and reality. Many on here, including me, have said we need to buy quality not quantity. Quality costs more money so if for example GP gets say £60m to spend in this window he could be looking at signing 3 better quality players at c.£20m each - which again breaks our transfer record. Only signing 3 players sees us evolve rather than overhauling the whole squad if the 3 signings do indeed improve the quality. So i hope my interpretation of PB’s statement proves correct and that works for me and makes complete sense !

There is no reason to believe Tony holds a vote. If a manager makes a good case for a player, within the budget maximum, there is no evidence to suppose the club would insist on an alternative.
