If you're looking for a rollicking song to send him/her off to No Surrender will perfectly fit the bill IMHO.

i would go for 'the rising' which was written as a reaction to 9/11, but seen by many as uplifting.

For anything more sombre I would go for anything from 'Nebraska'

Some day we'll be together.

Google it, there's a youtube clip, the lyrics fit really well.

At our good friend, Roy Chuter's funeral, there was quite a few Springsteen tracks. Wonderful & moving send off with no religion involved. just how he wanted it.

Bobby Jean, bittersweet but upbeat

The Promise, weepy

The Wrestler, just sounds like it would work (though it's not a track I'm massively fond of)

Racing in the Street, Springsteen Classic!

If it's for a bloke, you could do worse than spinning The Promise, from the CD of the same name, which are the outtakes from the 1978 Darkness On The Edge Of Town sessions

Includes the killer line, 'All my life I've fought this fight, the fight that no man can ever win, every day it gets harder to live, this dream I'm believin' in...'

And it's a ballad :)

Another vote for 'The Promise', beautiful track, written around the same time as Born to run but discarded along with some other quality material. Springsteen was absolutely prolific around this time and a lot of stuff never saw the light of day until much later.
