Some stats for you

You have to go back to 1996 to find a winner who wasn't an Olympian in an Olympic year.
Only 2 English winners in the past 9 years. Hamilton and Wiggins. The Welsh and Scotch back their own.
Cycling winners have done well in Olympic years. Hoy and Wiggins both winners. Adlingtons double gold wasn't enough.
Only Leigh Halfpenny has placed in Rugby union in recent years. England maybe playing superbly but it doesn't pay to look for the winner there.
Murray placed in 3 of the last 4 years.
Recency bias always plays a part.

Good stats.

Plenty of double (London 2012) winners in Rio too.

Mo Farah, Alistair Brownlee, Laura Trott, Andy Murray, Sir Brad (although the recent TUE news may have derailed him), Jason Kenny.

Chris Froome has got to be up there, but I agree - he probably isn't popular enough. Other 2012 winners (Charlotte Dujardin, Nicola Adams, Jade Jones) not in popular enough sports.

Here's a couple of wildcards - Nick Skelton (for sentiment), Max Whitlock (for history).

Adam Peaty? Top three potential - but swimming isn't going to get the votes.

Going by the recency argument - then it's hard to look past Andy Murray - Gold in Rio, Wimbledon, end the season as number 1.

Hamilton's only chance of top 3 is if he wins the F1 title.

But Murray also goes by the non-English winner stat. I reckon:

1. Murray
2. Farah
3. Trott / Brownlee

How about team - GB Hockey (Women's)?

Accepting that having a "personality" is not a pre-requiste to be nominated, who else do you think perhaps ought have been nominated for their 2016 sporting performance?

On bet365, Andy Murray is currently quoted as 1/8. In the olden days, they'd have paid you out on a genuine punt by now. But, no, they're clinging to their Cash Out offer and trying to save themselves a few bob. Guess statistically it makes sense. Just seems a bit cheap somehow.
