[Brighton] Sports shops in Brighton and Hove

Bought my first pair of football boots in Swift Sports around late 80's I think.

Not a sports shop I know, but the biggest loss in my life as a child was Beatties at the Clock Tower. So much so that 25 years later I'm still gutted about it. I believe it's a Pizza Hut now.

Got my first pair of Patrick Keegans from Swift Sports. After that David Rose became my go to sports shop as we lived near the Dials. I used to get 10% discount, but for the life of me cannot remember why - might have been a school connection, or possibly the club I played for

I remember when the owner retired and said that sadly neither of his son's wanted to take the business on. He was incredibly knowledgeable, affable and kind hearted. From my first airflow ball to my last pair of Predator boots I bought for Uni football I always went there even if it meant an extra £5 or whatever on the item because it was worth supporting.

I bought some Puma King Astros from there just before they closed down and still using them. Real shame that they didn’t want to carry on.

Not Brighton & Hove but for old fashioned sports shops there is still David O Jones in Littlehampton. I believe Tyndall is still there, even though he was supposed to retire, and probably still got the pen on a bit of elastic hanging from the ceiling.

Olympus Sports at the Clock Tower (next to the Quadrant pub I think on he NW side).

Late 70’s and 80’s.

I bought Adidas Samba and Mamba trainers there when at school.

Completed my work experience from school there, this led to a Saturday job then full time when leaving school. Worked for them for 4 years.

Wasn't there a shop called 'Sport and Ski' in Brighton, somewhere? Possibly the old Churchill Square or nearby?

Intersport in churchill square (and it's eternal 'closing down sale')

I thought Inter sport were along Western Road opposite the old C&A shop. I'm sure they were brought out by BSC ( British shoe corporation)who also owned Olympus sports, and many of the fashion chains around at the time. Olympus Sports had there flagship store 301 Oxford Street London, at the time Europe's biggest sports shop. One front window was full of TV screens with the famous Olympus sports videos showing, anyone remember the videos.

Boots at the clock tower had a sports department in it, I remember being there for the opening of it by Alan Minter. Swifts Grand parade use to do alot of Cricket equipment.

The Jog Shop is a very local shop for local people. It's in Kemp Town. They organise the Weakest Link Relay run every year at the Marina and NSC has provided 3-4 teams of 4 runners for the last 5 years (but not Covid years). https://www.brightonsports.co.uk/theweakestlink

Did the large CO-OP in London Road sell sports equipment?
I saw Subbuteo mentioned and that was definitely sold there in their toy department.

Yes, it had a dedicated Sports section although it was fairly small - I remember it used to stock American Football jerseys which was a bit niche.

Good thread this - some great memories.

David Rose moved from the Dials to near Palmeira Square didn't it? I brought my first cricket bat from there. A few months later whilst contemplating another swing & miss in the nets at Varndean - I noticed the bat had 'reject' stamped on its side. Marvellous.

I'll add RUN (Blatchington Rd) to the list - I've been getting my running shoes from here for years now

Hopefully the independant sports shop will stil be a thing on the high street in years to come.

I thought David Rose had 2 shops, 7 Dials and Western Rd Hove, maybe the Dials closed before the Hove shop you mentioned.

Swift sports was a huge loss

Swifts was the go to place for racket sports. I still have a Desmond Douglas table tennis blade with custom butterfly rubbers which is still going strong after 30 years from Swifts!
