Southwick's OK. My gran lived there for 65 years. Shops are a bit limited, whole centre is old-fashioned in a tired, post-war kind of way, but Brighton's not far away, so shouldn't be a problem. I would guess there are more retired people living in Southwick (south of the Old Shoreham Road) as a % compared to Shoreham or Portslade.
Bizarrely this thread wasn't about you and where you want to live. Think of it as role play, now you are going to have to demonstrate some empathy here, I know this is going to be hard. Alternatively, why not start your own thread. I reckon NSC could have plenty of fun with suggestions as to where Nibble could go.

SOUTHWICK IS LIKE AMSTERDAM
Southwick is like Amsterdam
only smaller and quieter
there aren't any prostitutes or sex shops
New Model Army have never played here
very few people use illicit substances
and no one commits adultery.
Southwick is like Amsterdam
except that when you walk through the Square
the people who ask you for money
have perms instead of dreadlocks
'crack' is something found in the pavements
that the nice Adur Council workmen missed
'heroine' is strictly an amateur dramatic role
and 'pavement' is a pavement,
not a cultishly successful
American grunge band.
'Score' is something Southwick Football Club used to do
but doesn't any more
'gay' means 'light-hearted or merry'
and 'dope' is someone
who has left their bus pass at home.
Terry and June have always lived in Southwick

Monty Python visit occasionally
The Levellers' latest CD was spotted on sale in Woolworths once
- now Woolworths is a Chinese supermarket
doing a nice line in pigs' uteri -
and all the poets and socialists were turned back at Hove.
But since my family roots here go back to the eighteenth century
I guess I slipped through the net...

the second amputated, along with its body
in a very radical architectural mastectomy
and there's only one canal
but it does have rats though -
you can see them scurrying
around the jetties at dusk
which is lovely
and it's full of mullet in the summer
and quite a lot of flatfish too
which for a lover of flatfish like myself
if you mullet over
constitutes a ray of hope
since it's actually rather a brill and soleful
plaice
to write poetry
and there's a towpath
where you can skate too
if you're a dab hand at it
but be careful not to flounder over the edge
because the water is rather foul
and in September
there's often nearly as much scum on its surface
as there is at the Brighton Centre
just along the road
attending the Conservative Party Conference.

OK, Anne Frank didn't live here
and there aren't as many bicycles
and the Heineken's a lot weaker
and Ajax would be a little out of place in the Sussex County League
but we've got a lot more flatfish.
And where there are flatfish
there's poetry.

Sorry Cheeserolls but this forum isn't about you either. If I feel I have summat to add to a thread in the same vein as other comments being discussed then I shall do so. I presume because I gave it a negative review it has somehow upset you but if I'd put a positive post you would have not had cause to comment. Which is frankly, Bullshit. Attila's poem has reminded me - the seafront is NOT good for sunbathing, but it is a fascinating place - kids who like exploring will love it.

4 beds and an office, you're essentially talking about a 5 bed place then. Another vote for Shoreham - although I've lived here all my life (and love it), so I didn't have to do the entrance exam.

However, I bet most couldnt afford to buy a house in parts of North Portslade (Benfield) or areas of Southwick ala Glebe Close / The Green etc. Some very nice places about, plus near the sea and next to the downs.
Where do you live out of interest, that is nicer than the above mentioned?

There is probably truth in that. The good thing about places like Southwick is that it is near enough to nice places that you wouldn'tget too depressed. But my opinion doesn't count on this thread so please disregard that comment.
Not that it has any bearing on my opinion of Southwick but I live in Hampton.

The beauty of Southwick is you can be a next door neighbour to Uncle Spielberg.

The streets around The Green in the centre of Southwick are nice. Nice large family houses that would cost 400k plus in Brighton. Glebe is a lovely school. But north of the Old Shoreham Road is very grey as is the expanse of housing heading towards Fishersgate.
Shoreham is nicer. Proper old town centre with loads of pubs and shops etc... plus the rail links from Shoreham are much better as some of the London bound trains pass straight through Southwick. Everything stops at Shoreham though.

As far as areas that are close to Brighton and Hove, Southwick is actually quite nice. It has it's pockets of not so nice but that is echoed in most areas near to a city.
The centre and green is pleasant. Glebe school is definitely the best in terms of ofsted and behaviour of children attending and I hate to say it but class of parent.
The secondary school which has historically been a struggling school has seen huge investment and vast improvements.
Choose your road carefully and Southwick is a good choice for a family home.
